The opportunity is hopefully going to arise soon that I can rent the field by my house and bring the horse home. Note thats only singular though, and I would want her to have a companion, if I can ride it or not isnt really important!

But I am only going to be able to ride one at a time, do you think this could become an issue, leaving one behind whilst I hack/school/compete? Altho if competiting would probably take both of them along anyway, I have help on the ground but Im the only one that rides. I'm not really sure about the best way to go on this one, any advice/thoughts would be much appreciated!

I have two shetlands to keep my mare company so one is never left. But have had an older pony here for the summer and he doesnt mind being left on his own
 
My horse has my very old, retired mare as a companion. There's a bit of neighing when I hack out without her, but she's not that bothered. It's a lot less trouble having 1 in work & 1 ret'd than 2 in work. Plus the mare is too sensible to feel like starting kicking matches / galloping about games etc.
 
The field isnt big enough to allow 3horses to graze on it, albeit if 2 of them are small!

Catembi- that sounds reassuring, I must admit I have been there done that re having the 2 horses in full competition work and it was alot to cope with. I dont know if I can do it again especially as Alevels are starting to get serious!
 
If you can find a slightly elderly retired pony they usually will not be too upset by being left for short periods. Could u rescue a shetland or something from the rspca..
 
You could go to the ILPH and they have a loan scheme that's really great, they have a lot of different types. To keep my horse company whilst I move away with the other one, I'm going to get an ILPH horse just as a companion. Feels good to know I'm helping out too.

We had a rescue pony as a companion a few years ago, but he was too nervous to be left on his own because of his background.

We now have a Welsh pony (about 11.2hh) who is 10. We bought him a couple of years ago as a companion. He is so quiet and doesn't mind being left at home when I take my comp horse out.

I think you can leave one pony on his own for short periods of time (ie a couple of days), providing that you get one with the right temperament. I would go for a gelding.
 
i bought a miniature shetland pony as a companion - best thing i've ever done she is the cutest ever and so easy to do costs nothing and is not bothered about being left either in stable or in field - i tried RSPCA ILPH etc but to ne honest they weren't that helpful and it was just easier to go buy one - i contacted local breeders and Maysie was unwanted as they couldn't breed from her.
