Just a light hearted post.

I have been very fortunate in my riding that my only injury has been 2 broken fingers (though I am lucky to have them still attached, curtesy of trying to hold onto a bolting TB on the ground).

and a badly bruised cocix (sorry crap spelling but you know what I mean) when my horse spooked and deposited me on the road still in a sitting position.

I was wondering what injuries have other people picked up over the years?

The old my scar is bigger than your scar thing!!

I got kicked in the face by an Angloarab, which 5 years down the line has resulted in me have maxilofacial surgery.. fun.

And I was on a spinal board after Ted fell over one night at collage, but all I had was concussion, so that was good!!

Nailed- ouch! :-( That's my one fear, being kicked in the head / face, hope you're on the mend.

None of mine were serious, which is good as I can have good laugh about them now. Let me think, Got kicked in the thigh by Misty - she was mistreated when we got her, so was very defensive.

Kicked in the knee by my friend's horse after getting caught in the middle of a field arguement - I'll learn!

Kicked in the ankle, but the same horse whilst out riding with said friend. We all squished into a layby to let a car past and stupidly I let Saffron get behind Fen, Fen lashed out at Saf, but got me instead. Had to ride back to the yard, then drive for 20 minutes to get home - it was my left (clutch) leg. All of the above were on my left side (unlucky side) none resulted in major damage, just some nasty bruising.

Leading Misty whilst doing pony rides at a school. Someone kicked a football in the direction of the ponies, went right underneath Misty who bolted and dragged me underneath her. I escaped with a hole in the inside of my ankle which still shows the scar some 8-10 years later. Bleh!

Interesting riding accident with Saffron, we were cantering up a bridleway, and for no reason she fell over onto her side. Somehow I avoided crushing my leg, but smacked my head pretty hard and suffered concussion and an overnight hospital stay. And of course had to ride home concussed.

I think that's about it, luckily they weren't serious :-)

I got a broken foot on my 3rd riding lesson, when the 17.2hh ex racehorse nicked off around the indoor school in a lesson and i back flipped off the back door into the wall at the corner. He did this twice, and the second time i sustained the injury - i was made to ride another horse with a broken foot!!!

It was actually the stirrup that shattered my foot,rather than the fall. I was very lucky to not break my neck! My foot print is still on the viewing gallery glass thing 7ft in the air! Not good!

So hence i had a problem with corners in canter - all solved now though!

Roughly in order...

cracked skull about 30 years ago, riding hatless, didn't duck quite far enough for the overhanging branch, knocked myself out cold and mallet fractured one of my fingers when I hit the ground. This was in the days before mobile phones, so I had to catch the horse and ride back to the yard.....ouch!

20 years ago, was leading tacked up horse when she pulled away from me, realised somewhat belatedly that the only thing connecting me to the horse was the buckle on the reins - the pin had dug into the end of my finger

15 years ago a tumble off while showjumping, landed on my hip on hard ground and twisted my pelvis - 3 years of physio followed but it hasn't been right since.

4 years ago a tumble off a youngster, landed on the other hip. If I thought I was stiff before this one really finished me off...

Doubled barreled in the face, breaking both my eye sockets, sinuses, cheek bones, multiple fractures to nose, upper and lower jaw. Ripped through to the bone between my nose and lip (surgery on the scar still to come, and dental work), and fractures through to the brain. I was completely unrecognisable on Christmas day....

Horse/rider fall, kicked in head and totally knocked out, was badly concussed but nothing else, bloody good job for once I was wearing a hat!

Came off P jumping and did this, cracked a vertabrae in my neck too and was concussed (after the fall I put all the jumps UP to 1.20 and jumped them and I don't remember doing it, riding back to the yard or driving home - ooops!)

OUCH!!!!

I'm quite lucky, the worst injury I've had was when Zoom bit through my finger (pulling hair out of her throat when she was choking). It went all the way through and I now have a wonky finger.

I also chipped a bone on my ankle when a horse we were riding out with turned and double-barrelled Zoom........only missed and kicked me!

I have been double barreled in the chest, luckily only had bad bruisimg, and i am now seeing an osteopath for what has now been diagnosed as a compressed lower spine afer a fall about 18 months ago. And would you believe the hospital consultants couldnt find anything wrong, so iv been in a lot of pain for over a year!!!

I have broken;
nose x3
both ankles
3 ribs
Plus;
ligament damage in back
dislocated both shoulders several times
done the ligaments in my feet/ankles - both at same time
Plus more neck sprains than I care to remember.
Was unconscious for 20 mins once, and was airlifted with suspected broken back - but walked out of hospital an hour later.

Broken little toe when I was 14 when pony jumped over a puddle and landed on it..........................

errrrrrrr....... torn ligaments in hip from falling off of merlin xc...... and a ribcage heamatoma from xc fall on kids pony.

My life is either charmed or I dont do enough!!!

Very experienced jumping horse slipped on bad going and fell on me (she was horrified, bless her!), after which my left foot turned completely black. Was still limping 3 days later when I crashed my car and had the devil's own job persuading the policeman not to call an ambulance.
My favourite hunter spotted a big ditch behind the hedge we were about to jump and ran out at the last minute, planting me in the hedge..thought my worst injury was bruising to my back, but the whiplash to my neck is still giving me gyp five years later!
Broken big toe from jumping off the same horse when riding him side saddle - he moved when I was halfway down...
I'm very accident prone and have always got some sort of horse related injury - currently a sliced finger from cleaning out my mare's drinker and a big black bruise on the other hand from when it got crushed between two poles whiile I was course building!

Concussion...on several occasions
Broken hand (rotational fall during SJ

)
Dislocated hip
Twisted pelvis
Permanent bicep muscle damage (Ellie trod on it

)
Suspected broken neck....turned out to be severe whiplash
Small nose fracture (pony reared and smacked me in the face)
Cracked shin bone (landed on my feet, albeit on top of the planks I was trying to jump, when my instructor's 4 yr old refused

)
Broken little toe (trodden on by YO's mare - she wasnt even shod!

OH recently broke his back- displacement fracture of L1 and 2. He has had surgery, is wearing a body brace, cannot drive for at least 6 weeks and no riding for a year

I have had a skull fracture from falling onto the road (with a proper hat on), numerous bruises and have a permanent dent and nerve damage in my leg from being attacked by a mare who double barrelled my cob as he was jumping out hunting
shocked.gif
she had refused and was being ridden away from the fence when she suddenly hit reverse and T-boned me and Dex

One advantage of being a total wuss in the saddle is that I've never had a bad injury from a fall.

I've only fallen off twice and both times got nothing worse than scrapes and bruises. I am very accident-prone in general though - I've been in casualty with concussion so many times that the nurses there know me and probably think I have a habit of headbutting walls or something.

I can't remember all of them, but the most painful was when I tried to get on my pony, who spooked at me, bolted, and dragged me about 100-200yds down a gravel track on my back - foot caught in stirrup. One I'd been "dropped", ran round and caught pony, I got back on and went out for my ride. I finished off, came home, and my top was stuck to my back
crazy.gif
My mum had to carefully pick all the little bits of gravel out of my skin and the grazing went so far down my back I couldn't sit down properly for two weeks. I probably should have gone to A&E but we had a family gathering going on so I didn't want to be a pain by taking on of my parents away from the party!

I still have the scars to prove it (most of my back is scarred!)
Not so horrific compared to some on here - ouch!

yes please!
iv been lucky *touches wood* i have only damaged the tendon in my finger when my pony pulled back with my finger still in the head collar. and just bruising.

Quite a few pulled muscles lol.

Broken foot - jumped a ditch whilst out hacking and landed on soft ground, Dylan fell and I came off over his shoulder. Still not sure to this day how that managed to break my foot! Didn't feel it at the time, rode for an hour back to the yard but by the time I got there I couldn't take any weight on my foot at all.
Broken hand - kicked by my friend's mare.
Permanent bruising on both feet from getting repeatedly stood on.

Nothing too bad at all, really. I've been remarkably lucky *touches wood*
