I have recently bought a horse with approx £750 actual winnings.
She hasn't competed properly for about 4 years now but in the future i'd like to affiliate her again.

I am aware that she wouldn't be able to do the smaller classes to win money but could we still compete just for the fun and experience and to gain more confidence?
And say for example we came first out of all other competitors, would i still get a rosette and just not get any money, or would i recieve nothing?

Or is that the point of amature shows?!

It's all so confusing!!

Hi, Loads of open classes these days from 1m upwards, should be lots for you and £prizes too :).

Start by looking up schedules at your local venues to get an idea, as they mix opens inbetween say british novice and discovery sometimes

You wont be able to do British Novice or probably Discovery. These have notional limit of £99 and £175. You may still be able to do Newcommers as notional limit is £300 for that. You dont say what the notional winnings are.

You can still do open classes and these start from 70cm at intro shows.
Most shows will have a 95cm, 1.05, 1.15 open classes and as you say there is always the Am.Champs classes starting at 90cm.

You could still enter BN and disco classes but would have to go HC and you wouldn't placing or prize money. You also have to stay HC for the duration of the comp once you have gone HC. So you couldn't do BN as HC then enter 1m Am.Champ competitively on the same day unless the 1mtr was before the BN (unlikely).

Clear as mud?

At BS Intro shows you can jump a horse of any grade or winnings in the open classes and still win money and rosettes. This is the whole point of these shows, to give experienced horses an opportunity to compete at a lower level with new or inexperienced riders. So, you could compete your mare in a 70cms class at an Intro show and you would win prize money if placed (remember BS shows only pay out 1 money prize for every 5 entries) and get points toward your Regional Points competition.

Have fun!

I would find out about the notional winnings first but there are classes from 70cm as others have said you can do - definitely do the amatuers its good and good finals etc xx

what are the horses notional winnings? because that is what restricts you to what classes you can enter. for example; to enter a british novice (90cm) the horse has to have less than £100 notional winnings, to enter discovery (1m) they must have less than £175 notional, for newcomers (1m10) less than £300 notional and for foxhunter (1m20) must have less than £600 notional winnings.

tbh though, even if your horse has won too much notional money for any of these classes, there are still plenty of open classes (ranging from 70cm at intro shows and upto 1m25+... 1m05 and 1m10 opens are very common) and there are the amateur classes; 90cm, 1m, 1m10, 1m15 and 1m20... and they have no winnings limit... just the top 450 riders on the riders ranking list can't enter or something like that, but they are pretty much for anyone - so you can always enter these :)

but, in answer to your other question, yes you COULD enter british novice and discovery if you have too many winnings but enter for confidence/fun... BUT you'd have to enter HC (non competitively due to class winnings limits) and so wouldn't get placed/money/rossette even if you technically won the class! so it would be better just to enter opens/amateur classes that you are actually eligable for and can win prize money etc :)
