I go out to compete on my own. Sometimes meet up / bump into lots of people I know at shows, sometimes no one at all. Someone commented on what would I do if I fell and was injured, especially hunting, which got me thinking. Apart from having an ICE number saved on my phone I don't have much of a contingency plan. Does anyone have any 'in case of emergency' plan? Wondered if I should put some contact details in the lorry, yard managers number et c.

No not really, and should considering I have been hunting and going to events on my own for the last 12 yrs!

Hunting wise, I have many friends on the field and am certain that if anything happened, one of them would take my horse home or take me to A & E - the beauty of hunting is you are never alone, unless you hack home early, so there are always people about in an emergency.

Competing wise I only go to local venues and know the managers well, so again, am sure they would help if there was a problem. Most shows have ambulances/vets on call etc too so are well prepared for emergencies.

Having said that, I think it would be very sensible to have contact details of your family/yard/vet etc somewhere visible, and something I ought to do too.

I'm like you. I go most places alone and normally meet up with friends there so between us we'd find a way of getting a horse home. I'd always be happy to take a horse back if it was needed, even if it was somebody I didn't know.

BE ask you to fill in details of the yard etc and if you're travelling alone when you enter - I assume so they can find someone from the same area to take your horse home for you if you're carted off to hospital.

Having details in the lorry would only be ok if people knew where to look. Maybe there should be a protocol for this sort of thing - if there's not one already that we don't know about?

Everybody should leave details in the glovebox or in the pocket of the driver's door or something like that.

well glad I am not the only one who didnt really think about it - suddenly I thought there may be some sort of "done thing" that I didn't know about!

I am starting out with a new - very friendly - hunt and am sure I/the nag would be taken care of completely. And generally at shows I am somewhere I am known/know people - and as I have a pink lorry I am not too inconspicious so they should be able to match lorry to horse to a degree!

Think i will pop a contact list on the dash. Cant do any harm.

When i have parked up at bigger shows and gone far from lorry (hickstead etc) I have left a "incase of problem with horse please call xxx) on the dashboard, something I thought to do having heard a tannoy announcement that someones horse was trying to climb out of un supervised lorry!

I have an ICE number in my phone and an ICE Horse number too. Usually I have someone with me but hopefully both numbers would be called in an emergency. The horse one goes through to my friend who has a trailer and would come and deal with my horse or pony if I wasn't in a position to due to injury etc. I carry the phone on me whenever hacking too as I recon you never know when something could happen.
At shows we leave an emergency numb on the temporary stable and in the car windscreen. At home there is the vet and farrier number up inside the stables. Hopefully that covers things as much as possible?

At shows we have occasionally left the walkie talkie in the box (eg if pony has to be left while course walking or something), it has a sort of baby monitor setting and I would be able to hear if there was a rumpus in the box while I was away.

I hate seeing horses unsupervised and no contact number. Several shows I've had the neighbouring horse kicking hell out of the box parked by us and no owner to be seen or contact number :(

I have an ICE number saved on my phone. Unfortunately the one time it was needed I was unconscious and therefore no one could access my phone. I keep trying to remember to WRITE an ICE on the outside of my phone for future disasters!

I have ICE on my phone: ICEME, ICEDOGS, ICEHORSE! I also wear a BEIDS wristband with a contact number that gives access to my 'emergency plan' plus detailed info on my dogs and horses - diet, medical conditions etc etc - plus who has a key to access my house and directions on how to get in if a stranger has to access it. Well worth the BHS Gold membership fee that I pay in order to access this service........if I had had to wait until being accompanied to events/hunting or whatever I would have done nothing in life. Not ideal I know and yes, it can put on others, but I've done my share of picking up lost dogs, stabling injured horses at events etc etc.
