As I can't find anything on BE on this. My horse had a bad eye infection (AHT stay as a result) and is showing clear discomfort when in bright sunshine. He was wearing an all singing/get rid of UV fly mask which makes a huge difference and I have also bought a lightweight UV mask for hacking in. I had a jump lesson yesterday and that time out in the sunshine started to have an impact. Wasn't helped by one of his field friends removing his mask in the afternoon. I have medication which reduces the puffiness and watering quite quickly but want to avoid rather than react to this problem.

I know you can compete with the ear mask/fringe but actually covering the eyes? I wouldn't jump in it but dressage? Horse is happily hacking out with no spookiness or concerns with this mask on.

According to the rules you are only permitted to use a nosenet (with a dispensation certificate) or a fly veil (outdoors only). Your best bet is to speak to the secretary and see if you could get a dispensation cert with vet approval for a mask but I doubt it.

I believe you have to get separate dispensation for a face mask. I had too for BD for my head shaker, all they needed was a letter from my vets explaining what it was for and wasn't for masking any other injury/illness.

Thank you. A fly mask would really help. His treatment was lengthy and had to be claimed on my insurance so won't have a problem obtaining a letter confirming the issue.

From the BD Rulebook:

"Equilibrium Net Relief Riding Masks are permitted during competition and warm up if written dispensation has been granted from the BD office. A veterinary certificate is required to confirm the reason a dispensation is being applied for."

Not doing BD currently but the way that is worded makes it look as if its only the equilibrium which is allowed. I have their fly mask but a different make for the riding mask.

However thank you for your help. I know what I need to search on now..

If unaffiliated then it's probably going to be at the discretion of the show organisers. Most shows are fairly relaxed so would just take your vet cert with you and check its ok in advance :)
