I hopefully will be going to university and plan to join a riding club or loan a horse. I would like to compete. What I was thinking since I will have no money and no competition gear that I would just get a cheap suit jacket for men from asda or something. Would this be okay? I have long boots, might need a new hat but I do have one that would do. I do have body protector, its just shirt, show jacket and tie that I don't have.

Well shirts and ties can be picked up cheaply from sales, or second hand. For a jacket, you'd be better to try your local horsey facebook groups or preloved for a second hand tweed. You're never out of place in a decent tweed, even if it's old.

Hm not sure you would find a suit jacket all that comfy for riding. Why not go to a tack shop and try on a show jacket, have a good look at it, notice what its got in it and how it feels, then you will know what you are looking for. I agree with all the above suggestions. Charity shops brilliant for shirts and ties! We have a local horsy facebook group (all things horses) - dont know if there is one where you are, but probably. You see quite a few things for sale on there second hand so you might be able to find a jacket. Also look out for car boot sales. Finally, I wouldnt worry too much if you can't get one before you go - if you are part of a riding club you may well be able to borrow one from someone when you are there, or maybe even buy one off an outgoing member. Hopefully if you do well on the team they will be keen to help you with some kit! Remember to post some pics on here when you get there :-)

look on your local horsey web pages/fb groups you can usually pick up decent jackets off there for the price of a new suit jacket. also agree go for tweed its acceptable for almost anything :)
