Competition Horses....their weekly routine, turnout and feed?

16.1hh ISH
bsja's up to newc
Fed coprameal 2 small scoops, Sustain 1 scoop, topchop alfa 1 scoop, soya oil and redcell. twice a day.
3 haylage nets
depends on weather and whether he's been ridden but 1-6 hours t/o a day.
Ridden everyday schooled or interval trained, gets a day off after a show!

Fleur is a 10yo kwpn and this season even eventing at intro and pn level. She is out pretty much 24/7 but comes in if miserable as not huge amounts of shelter as up on moor and also if competing early next day.

Feed wise normally gets a feed in the mornings with scoop baileys conditioning mix (for it's slow release energy as barley free rather than it's conditioning properties!!) and a measure of baileys lo cal balancer. Through winter she just gets some chaff and balancer as with hayledge that is more than sufficient!

Work wise as said competing pn but have her schooling medium and aim to compete bd this winter. Currently work her 5/6 (normally 5) days a week which is a random mix of schooling, gentle/fast hacking and intervals training. Occasionally jump her but literally only couple times a month. Currently doing a bit more hacking than normal as taking advantage of daylight but give it a month and we will only be able to hack at weekends if at all comps depending!! She also goes on the walker, not so much now but more one they are in overnight for the winter.

my 17 year old dressage mare is out 24/7 atm apart from when i ride (only because we only have 2 stables and exmoor is currently in so she can get used to me) she is usually out all night and then brought in at 9/10 am and then ridden in the afternoon and then put out straight after at about 4pm ish.
Fed hayledge ad lib and feed half a scoop of winergy low energy and mineral supplement

3 year old as above except turned away currently so when he comes in, it is only to be groomed.

From nov- feb/march they will be in at night and turned out from 7/8 am till 5/6 pm. fed twice a day winergy low energy and mineral supplement.

Mine is competing dressage and/or showing once or twice a month. He gets 1/3 conditioning cubes and hifi, plus supplements twice daily. he comes in at night all year round as he is a sensitive soul ;) He is schooled most days (45 mins) hacked once or twice a week(30 mins) and jumped every other week if i can.

when eventing, worked every morning for an hour ish, maybe more. sometimes worked in the afternoon too.
they're turned out a lot, depends on the horse though. sometimes in at night through summer, sometimes not. sometimes on restricted grazing, sometimes not.
fed 2 to 4 times a day depending on level they're competing at, condition, etc.
feeds vary hugely, but are basically happy hoof or similar, plus alfa if necessary, plus balancer. additional energy feed if required.

Really interesting thread thankyou!
Mine are currently in during the day(until weather turns), fed Winergy Equilibrium low energy 3 times a day along with apple cider vinegar, blood salts, linseed. Salt blocks in their stables which they love after they have worked and eaten.
ad lib haylage 24hrs and good grass (they're poor doers!)
Hacking 1hr 4/5 times per week 20 mins schooling including poles x2

8 y.o Hanno x IDxTB mare, events at weekends, PC horse.

School 4-5 times a week, either in field or in arena. School 20 mins twice a week followed by a hack down road at trot (about two miles in all) and walk back. Other two sessions are 30-40mins intensive, includes polework and occassionally a jumping session otherwise she pretends she's petrified of fillers when we go out.

Hack whenever I can properly, but we have to go with someone as there are a few lorries that go past, and I'm quite choosy who I go with as mare is very affected by companion horse! But she does get to go down the road, so it's not too bad.

Fast work in field after 15mins schooling, gallop in fields around us. Event on weekends, and if not take out somewhere even for some schooling or a lesson somewhere else.

Turned out 24/7 throughout summer with no hard feed at all, grass is quite rich and she does fine on it! Hotwired mare any way. She does come in night before comps and get a feed (chaff and handful of quick release energy) though, and has a saltlick in her stable and field.

In at night, out at day in winter (out being 6:30-6ish) and clipped out, so rugged up to the ears! Then she gets plenty of hay, scoop of chaff, two cups of balancer which is beefed out with some pasture mix if we have any.

Hi there

I have one horse which has started eventing - first year this year and done one BE80 and one BE90, previously I have competed BSJA and BE with other horses

This is what I do with my current horse -

Turnout:

at the moment he is out 24/7 however I feel he is very tired when I take him places unless I bring him in for a couple of nights prior to competition. I don't have anything other than field shelters which have made do until now (stables going up just now)

Once I can, he will be in every night without fail and will be out every day from 7am (ish) to 6pm, unless it is miserable then he will be in for most of the day too.

Exercise:

Ridden 4 x a week plus competition. He usually gets the day before and day after as a holiday - No reason why - It was something we did when we had BSJA ponies

Schooled on a Tues, Interval training Wed & Fri, Jumped on the Thurs (only over 5 - 6 fences if necessary), Hacking on the other day

My schedule is fairly flexible as I have no arena so if the weather is bad we have to go hacking instead.

At the moment we have one event left so he is on holiday following this - I try and give my horses 3 months off over winter

Feeding:

During competition, he is fed competition mix and alfa-a, I only use electrolytes if he has sweated up a lot, but never in his water, I don't use supplements as I am not convinced by them, I just make sure that he is getting fed the correct amount of competition mix as advised by the manufacturers.

When on holidays, he gets a scoop of pasture mix/nuts to keep him being caught - I am just changing him over just now as he will be off on hols next weekend.

Think thats about it!

I think that everyone has different ideas - and every horse is different, my last horse couldn't cope with being out all the time, (I think he was scared of the dark!)

Advanced endurance horse - arab, 15hh, 14 years old. We've been competing at 50 mile events this season and last weekend did a 50 mile race ride at av 14.37kph, 5 1/2 hour riding time... so he's pretty fit!

He lives out 24/7, very poor grazing, supplemented with the equivalent of two large nets of haylage a day. Hard feed he gets half a scoop of Calm & Condition, one scoop of Just Grass, half scoop speedibeet, mug full of porridge oats and a slurp of Corn Oil - twice a day.

Exercise wise once endurance horses are fit i.e. competing at 50 mile plus rides regularly, they don't do that much between rides. So after a 50 mile ride he will get at least a week off completely, then his work will pick up again, but only worked every other day alternating between lunging for 30/40 minutes, flat work session of 45 to 1 hour, and fast hilly hacks of between 14 and 20kms (aim to complete them in less than 2 hours). Once the distances get above 50 miles or you want to complete rides faster (the top guys will be averaging over 20kph in 100 mile race rides) then you add in faster work on the gallops. I haven't got to that point yet... but next year hopefully! You also use the shorter rides (25 milers/30 milers/40 milers) to build up to the longer/faster rides as you tend to ride faster at events than you do at home.
