probably should be in another forum but thought you guys would have experieneces like this

mare lost her hind shoe this afternoon but half her foot came off with it luckily farrier has come out and put it back on and checked other shoes she was only shod 2 weeks ago so really it shouldn't have come off and definitely not with the amount of foot that came with it

was thinking of using something to improve strength and growth of the shoe but should i be looking at feeds/hoof care creams or something else?

ideally something which is fairly instant in showing results as pc area eventing next weekend and would like her feet to look a tad better so any suggestions please?

I have excatly the same problem with my horse. i have found after alot of trial and error the best thing that seams to work at the moment (touch wood) is feeding NAF Pro feet and applying Naf rock had every other day inside and out and put courincreasine around the corent band.

Same here with crumbly feet at the mo, though not so bad that she's losing shoes.

I'm feeding Formula 4 Feet. 6 weeks in and my farrier has already noticed a better quality foot.

He used a polyfilla type material over one shoeing period and that seemed to stop any more foot breaking off.

Apart from that I don't think you'll find anything that will magically turn her feet fantastic.

Don't use studs unless you absolutely have to.

formula 4 feet works well on my boy. newmarket cream helps too. i keep his overreach boots on all the time too, just in case.

My gelding came to me back in Feb with crumbling feet, they were so bad he was in supportive heart bars. Any way I put him on Naf Profeet and it was the best thing we could of done. there was a huge improvement by the time we got him shod the second time. I am a pure profeet convert

I've just started feeding mine Horse First Feet first and the results are unbelievable. I believe it contains twice the biotin as other foot supps. If you phone the company they'll happily talk through it. I've just ordered more in I'm so happy with it. Plus I've only been using it 3wks and there is a definite improvement already.

Formula4Feet is good stuff

but take care with NAF rock hard, I use it as and when but a friend of mine went over board and made her horses feet too brittle with the result that he's now been out of work for 5 weeks (long story and not entirely the cause but certainly contributory)

Also a great fan of Kevin Bacon hoof dressing for maintaining the moisture balance

thanks for the replies sounds like formular4feet or Naf Pro are the best two so will look to see which our local stores have in

TPO i will also get in contact with horse first feet and see what they say

Megabeast how does the Kevin Bacon hoor dressing work? (is it wrong that im thinking footloose is quite funny especially with the topic?

I use the conucresine dry and brittle daily hoof moisturiser and is doing the job atm, it's a white paste you paint on!

There is a user on here called thefarrier who is very helpful and as the name suggests is a farrier.

right.. sorry to put a dampener on things but any nutritional hoof supplement will take aleast a 6 month period for the horn where the nails are going to to see a diffrence, and a full hoof growth to improve the quality of the horn at the base (around 9 to 12 months)

As for hoof treatments, Naf hoof moist allows the hoof to function normally as it is water based and not oil based.

haha look at you holding out on me when ive been speaking to you all night how dare you!!!

are you secretly trying to sabotage me as your really doing the open next week and not what you say you are

and another point.. Forumula4Feet and Farriers formula were both originally produced by the same bloke. so are basically the same.

If I had to vote for a hoof supplement I would vote for NAF Profeet everytime.

I would recommened that most horses are put on a hoof supplement. And i recommend NAF Profeet. and if you go online and go to 1stforsupplements you can get two litres of it for 36 when i paid 29 for one litre at the saddlry.,

I think a feed is the only way forward, I don't feed a seperate supplement as my mare doesn't like supplements but I feed blue chip pro and have a tb who(touch wood) doesn't lose shoes. The farrier has commented how good her feet are and on the last occasion about 8 months ago when she over reached and took her shoe off forcibly she was sound without hacking until farrier came and put it back on. As nailed say though it will take a while and short of a hoof transplant it will still be like that next weekend.

Yip agree about feet supplements taking at least 6mths to make a difference but I swear in 3wks of using Feet First there is a difference. I just wish I'd photographs!! After 12wks of not being able to get shoes on me wee mare now I can

Also using Effol and massaging the cornet band.

Another suppliament you can give is gelatin although this should be the 'vegetarian' variety as can make a difference to the feet quality faster than other suppliaments

Hoof heal is the best topical product as its very nourishing and really improves the quality. It only needs to be used three times a week and you will see results faster than with a suppliament although you should feed one anyway

My farrier told me that although Farriers Formula was the original stuff concocted by whoever, that after some years someone decided to change the recipe and this chap wasn't happy, so he left the FF company and started up again as F4F, making this stuff to his original recipe...

I don't know whether that's true.

But someone I know used to swear by FF for years, and then gave up on them and bought F4F.
