Competition Mix - Reccommendations..

Can anyone reccommend a good competition mix?

Once Murph is fit I will be changing his food as I plan to do a lot with him this Summer.

Also if you are feeding a comp mix can you feed something like Top Spec or Blue Chip alongside it - or will it not make much of a difference?

I like baileys number 4 - i think its great for both mine that compete and are in quite alot of work, Other wise 'allen and page' do one.... but cant remember what its called, sorry!
 
You can feed a balancer alongside it. Howver, I would wait to see how he copes with the increased workload. You would be surprised how much workhorses can do on increased amounts of low/medium work feeds. I know alot of people who are competing at a high level and never get off Cool mixes for their horse

Otherwise, Spillers slow release is great IMO.

That's interesting. I am half feeding the food for added 'pep' (he can sometimes get really lazy) and half feeding it for energy for shows etc. So I wonder if I need to have a ring round the feedlines and see what they reccommend...

You may find that improves with fitness....

But otherwise, it is worth ringing feed companies, increased energy can just make them fat if they arent using it, hence why i mention about lower energy feeds and fitness

Yeah true - he was a tad better last summer when he was fit - I might find I only need a good mix come then, but in the meantime Im just trying to do my homework - in so much as you can! - to find out what people reccommend, its difficult as every horse is different its probably more of a trial and error scenario!

Bailey's number 4 are the conditioning cubes, really helps to keep the weight on my mare who competes regularly and does a lot of work

She is also fed on Dengie Main Ring Red which is a mix for horses in medium work.
 
I'd echo what KatB has said - wait and see how he copes. My boy is, and has always been (since we got him at 3) been on Topline Nuts (Baileys No 4) and Hi Fi. We have tried changing it, added supplements, etc and always come back to a nice simple feed. It's slow release energy too. My boy can be lazy, but can be sharp as well (if that makes sense!!!). We tried him on an allrounder mix, which is the one benlow competition mix with some companies and he became very sharp and tense when ridden. When we put him back on Topline he was back to his usual self. I do add extra oil to his feed and I'm just thinking of adding a basic mix to his feeds as well, just to make it a bit more interesting for him. I would also increase the forage intake and probably put him on a good quality haylage before starting to fiddle with his hard feed - you might find that makes a big difference if he isn't already on it.
