Ok I am still hankering after a lorry big style

So can I have honest opinions, my thoughts so far are:

a) Buy a lorry for £5k ish (found a Daf 45 130 bhp J reg, but a container conversion_

b) Mortgage myself to the hilt to buy something newer

Is 130 bhp man enough? (I want to take 3 so need a decent payload, but also need a loo for dad)

This is for SJ every week, but in reality only really going on a 60 mile round trip once a week and occasional big trips for specials!

Agree they are about but buyer beware and check the paperwork from time of plating and work out weight of horses hay water people etc in my job I know far too many people who have been caught out and fines are heavy

Have to agree with SAF it is rare to find a 7.5T lorry that will stay under weight with 3. we have a special light weight build and loaded to the gunnels we can only carry 2 within the law. You need to be sure it is at least 5.5T unladen if not less. The ministry are tightening up on weights.

Oh that's really kind, are you going to pick me up on the way out to a party

Also a new rule coming in April i think, if the lorry is stalled out to carry 3 it must be able to do so & remian under the 7.5 tonnes fully laiden. Otherwise there will be a fine - even if you only carry two, so i have been led to believe.

I've found one at 5.6t unladen, but bet that was probably without water and full tank of fuel

I only want to carry 3 as I compete 2, but need another nag to stop them bellowing at each other.

There's a super lorry on eBay with all bells and whistles, but when I asked it was 6.4t without the nags so wouldn't carry 2!

So whats the general thought on the old versus new?

Hmmmmm maybe I should just push some cash into your pot and you can be my chauffeur

Tis my dream you know as I HATE driving to events alone, and I am always alone *sob*

Will have a look around and see if I can find anything for you, but I wouldn't go into debt if I were you - there HAS to be a way to make this work for you.

The Leyland Dafs are lighter than other cab/chassis anyway. With an ali body it allows you more leeway with weight you carry. I have one and its the best lorry I've ever had, turning circle is great, steers with one finger!

I think it is a complete and utter rubbish! Stalled for 3 what? Shetlands or shires?

My sister bought a J reg one a couple of months ago with really nice living, stalled for 3 and she paid £4,500 for it. It didn't have an MOT and the guy sold it to her as scrap, but all it needed was welding on the cab to get it thru it's plate.

However they have bought an S reg lorry for £3,000 with a brand new plate of Ebay and are swapping the bodies over.

I bought a Leyland DAF Euro II, 45-150, R-reg with a glasonite body and converted it ourselves with a local welder making the ramp, partitions etc. We fitted out the living ourselves - bought units cheaply from MFI's sale and with old caravan bits and bobs.

The lorry weighs 5.1 tonnes and is capable of carrying three horses - so it can be done

Forgot to add that altogether it cost about £6500 to do.

Lorry is really easy to drive but don't know if you would need a 150 rather than a 130 for three horses?

Best of luck!

somebody please tell me thats not true?

Mine will take 3 its a 7.5 tonne Iveco . Fab little lorry built by PRB with nice living too. Wouldn't take 3 big ones though - i've been on the weighbridge with a 14.2hh a LW 15hh and my lw 15.2hh and been ok. Couldn't do it filled up for events though.

130 horse power slowwww (but then mine will cruise at 60 up a hill on the M1 so i'm spoilt!)

i've been long for ages for a lorry and i think your going have to put a bit more money in pot

, as Yes you'll be able to pick up lorry for your price, but at what price for repairs??????? and running cost.........

My old dog of a Bedford is 4.8T unladen with basic day living, stick sided, glasonite body so can be done but you'd need to be careful.

Just about to swap it onto a MAN chassis

I hope it's rubbish or I'm in trouble

(though I do have saddle racks in the 3rd partition so could argue it's not used).

I bought a 1986 coachbuilt Merc 814 with your budget. Living is not particularly glam or posh and it's not how I'd have kitted it out but it has a sink and hob and a heater and as yet we've not stayed overnight in it and if we do, will probably only be once a year and it's quite functional for that.

It's partioned for 3 but at the moment there's a different sort of partition at the front and it's being used for tack. If you wanted to travel 3, the normal partition would go back in and off you'd go!

It's a little tatty on the body but nothing major wrong with it and no major rot etc.

We did look at loads before buying the Merc and saw loads of absolute rubbish in that price bracket.

So yes, I think you will get one but it may take you a while to find and you may see an awful lot of wrecks in the meantime!

Of course its not true.

What are they going to do? Pull you over to a weighbridge look in the back and go 'You've only got one horse, go and find another 2 somewhere so we can weigh you with 3 horses in'

Are they also going to say you must have a full tank of fuel, what if you had a load of hay, would you have to swap it for horses before they would weigh you?

They don't care what is in the back as long as it isn't overweight.
