Well, it has suddenly dawned on me, that with my first competition penciled in for April (eek!), I have nothing to wear, and have no idea what to wear.

There is nothing in the rules about dress, only that a safety hat has to be worn.

As I don't know what people wear for UK dressage either, I thought I'd better ask ;)

Is a black jacket or tweed more correct, should I wear a shirt and tie or polo? (I have no affiliation with PC, if that makes any difference!)

Also, although *everyone* wears white jods, I'm a size 16 (though going down slowly thank goodness!), would I look completely out of place wearing beige - or should I bite the bullet, and try to find white jods in a micro cord, or some other flattering material?

Thanks!

All of what you've suggested is fine, it's just how you pair them together so you look neat :)

Personally I like to wear a stock rather than tie, regardless of whether I'm wearing tweed or black/navy jacket. With a tweed jacket, you could wear beige jods, and then a coloured stock is more correct than a white/cream one. Though no one will mark you down for it :)

With a navy/black jacket, cream or white jods and the same colour stock is more correct. Again, no one will mark you down for it.

Just be neat and tidy in your turnout and enjoy!

Well, the usual way to go about choosing dressage clothes is to follow the British Dressage rulebook, even for unaffiliated competition (you can find this on the BD website; it's pretty comprehensive, and all the tack rules are in there too).

Quick synopsis re. your specific queries:
- Either black or tweed jacket is fine, though if you have both, the black one would be more standard (this isn't a rule, but most people seem to go for black/navy).
- With a jacket, you should be in shirt and a sensibly-coloured tie (or a stock shirt with a white stock if you prefer).
- Beige jodhs are perfectly okay - the rules state beige/white/cream unless you're in uniform (or a side-saddle habit) in which case they should match that.

Thanks, for the run down. :) I'm actually competing in France, and there is no guidance in the rules on what to wear until you are competing at Amateur (rather than "Club" - riding club) level :)

But it is good to know what people generally wear in the UK

Am guessing you would be fine in a tee-shirt but dark coloured jacket with light coloured top and breeches should do. Tie would look strange I think, but stock might do. My sister SJs in France and she wears a Kingsland purple jacket with no tie or stock.

I tend to wear beige jods, tweed hacking jacket, shirt and tie, black hat and gloves at prelim and novice and either my navy or black jacket (one is warmer than the other so it depends on the weather) with the appropriate coloured hat, gloves, white shirt and stock and cream jods (I find white rather unflattering) from elementary up. In the UK you have to wear gloves and I always have my hair in a hairnet.

OMG... never let me near a computer after a bottle of wine!

White breeches, black jacket, white shirt, stock and stock pin ordered :/

Fortunately all on sale, so I haven't spent *that* much.

I was very unsure if I should buy white breeches as I am "getting on" a bit, however, they do look very smart. You'll look and feel great, I'm sure. I hope you have a lovely time!
