Posted recently about my girthy mare being scoped. She turned out not to have ulcers but prior to this being known I did lots of research on how to help horses with ulcers. There's plenty that can be done alongside conventional treatments so just dropping what I found here.
It's all meant to be done WITH Omeprazole treatment though, not instead of, and most of the studies were done in rodents as mice & rats genome is 95% identical to the human genome and other rodents (e.g. guinea pigs) have a very similar immune system. Plus they are cheaper and easier to keep than horses who are large, potentially dangerous, and expensive to keep in a lab setting.

Dosages were for my horse's estimated weight of 500kg. So adjust as necessary.
As always, polite correction re. the sciencey bits is welcomed.

Supplementing with Convolvulaceae family
Sweet potatoes - a member of the Convolvulaceae - has been found to have ulcer-reducing properties as they reduce the presence of free radicals and thereby reduce oxidative stress.
Equine dose is calculated off 200mg/kg dosage for rats: 200mg = 0.28 grams. 0.2 * 500 = 100

Plaintain: (Ribwort and Broadleaf): 1.4 kg/day (pm)
These common members of the Plantaginacae family promote mucous production, thereby reducing acidity via dilution and neutralisation. They also contain compounds which promote tissue growth and repair - accelerating the healing process - and reduce oxidative stress, which is soothing.
Equine dosage was calculated off a rodent dose of 2.8mg/kg: 2.8mg = 0.0028 * 500 = 1400 grams = 1.4 kg

Nexium - this is esomeprazole, refuted to be faster acting and a more efficient proton pump inhibitor than the typically used omeprazole. https://www.researchgate.net/public...ministration_of_Esomeprazole_Magnesium_Nexium
Lots of anecdotes re. nexium use here but take with a big pinch of salt.

Never heard of sweet potatoes for them before! The only herbal supplement I had any luck with (& I've spent a fortune on them) was the one from thunderbrooks with slippery elm in it. I believe that helps coat the stomach.

Adding l-glutamine to the feed has also had a decent effect. I notice the difference when I run out.

For real problems though there is nothing that can beat omeprazol - i just wish it was cheaper.

I certainly had good results with a mare that I suspected of having ulcers, from some of her behaviour by using Aloe Vera juice as a supplement. If we missed a dose, she became grumpy again quickly.

I didn't know that sweet potato was part of the convulvulae family., you learn something new every day

Yes, ditto....But Nexium is esomeprazole (faster working more effective proton pump inhibitor - or alleged to be, anyway!! But with only one journal article you can't say for certain yet IMHO) and works out at a dose for a 500kg horse as £62.99 versus £279.99 )or similar) or gastroguard/omeprazole.
