Today has just completely shocked me, I honestly am at a loss at what to say about it.
Bertie is kept next to a secondry school near my house, on a farm near the lady who owns him. I have ridden him for the last three years whilst he has been kept there.
This morning I went to fetch bertie in from the field and I cannot believe what I found in the field- seven shards of glass about 30cm tall stuck into the ground
The field, I know, is used by truant kids to escape lessons, but which sick, twisted kids have STUCK shards of glass into the ground where horses are grazing, and WHY?!
I was shaking with anger, called his owner and lady who has the horse Bert shares a field with, both were shocked beyond words.
I brought both horses in from the field and went up to the shcool with Bert's owner, H, to speak to the head.
I can't believe the amount of ignorance, the head appologised for the children, but didn't see the danger in its real form.
H explain to the head that if the horses stood on that glass, they would have to be shot- to which she didn't understand at all. She went on to say that her grandchildren go into that field and the school could potentially face a murder charge if the children fell onto said glass (far fetched but perfectly possible). Head was completely speechless and said she though the reaction was a total over reaction, and whilst she will try her hardest, there was only a certain amount she could do- WTF- children are meant to stay in school, isn't it school's responibility to reinforce that?
At this point H pointed out that if said horse kicked pupil the blame would fall upon school and possibly us for having the horses.
Cut a long story short, we have decided to go to the police. They immediately set up an incident number and sent a community officer to the school (who actually happens to be a lady I compete with, therefore took it very seriously as she does understand the damage which could be caused to a horse who stood on a 30cm piece of glass)
School have been ordered to put up a fence, camera and employ staff to stop children getting into field.
Tonight I went up to the field ( which horses are no longer turned out in, until fence has been put up) and found that since this morning, four pairs of scissors had been STUCK, handles down into the ground, with the sharp metal bits stuck up. Again we reported it on our incident line, but honestly, I was no means a saint at school, but what sick, twisted minded children are raised to find any entertainment value in sticking life threatening objects in a field with livestock in, it absolutely chills and disgusts me beyond belief.
