Today has just completely shocked me, I honestly am at a loss at what to say about it.
Bertie is kept next to a secondry school near my house, on a farm near the lady who owns him. I have ridden him for the last three years whilst he has been kept there.
This morning I went to fetch bertie in from the field and I cannot believe what I found in the field- seven shards of glass about 30cm tall stuck into the ground
shocked.gif

The field, I know, is used by truant kids to escape lessons, but which sick, twisted kids have STUCK shards of glass into the ground where horses are grazing, and WHY?!
I was shaking with anger, called his owner and lady who has the horse Bert shares a field with, both were shocked beyond words.
I brought both horses in from the field and went up to the shcool with Bert's owner, H, to speak to the head.
I can't believe the amount of ignorance, the head appologised for the children, but didn't see the danger in its real form.
H explain to the head that if the horses stood on that glass, they would have to be shot- to which she didn't understand at all. She went on to say that her grandchildren go into that field and the school could potentially face a murder charge if the children fell onto said glass (far fetched but perfectly possible). Head was completely speechless and said she though the reaction was a total over reaction, and whilst she will try her hardest, there was only a certain amount she could do- WTF- children are meant to stay in school, isn't it school's responibility to reinforce that?
At this point H pointed out that if said horse kicked pupil the blame would fall upon school and possibly us for having the horses.
Cut a long story short, we have decided to go to the police. They immediately set up an incident number and sent a community officer to the school (who actually happens to be a lady I compete with, therefore took it very seriously as she does understand the damage which could be caused to a horse who stood on a 30cm piece of glass)
School have been ordered to put up a fence, camera and employ staff to stop children getting into field.
Tonight I went up to the field ( which horses are no longer turned out in, until fence has been put up) and found that since this morning, four pairs of scissors had been STUCK, handles down into the ground, with the sharp metal bits stuck up. Again we reported it on our incident line, but honestly, I was no means a saint at school, but what sick, twisted minded children are raised to find any entertainment value in sticking life threatening objects in a field with livestock in, it absolutely chills and disgusts me beyond belief.

That's terrible, I do hope you get it sorted out and the fence goes up quickly. Do you think they might catch the little b**tards that did it?

I'd be tempted to stay up there and see if I could catch them red handed....

They must have such boring, low lives that this is the only thing they have to do in their spare time when they are MEANT to be in school!!
I agree with you totally, I would be livid just as you are!

oh my god. i cant beleive that!! what bitter twisted children!

i hope you get this sorted. dont let them carry on :O

all the best!

The school should keep its kids under control. I would be watching from a fistance for a fll day, and if i caught them, I would make sure they didnt do it again the little swines. Mindless and total disregard for animal welfare.

Now the police are involved I should hope whoever gets caught will get punished seriously, it is vandalism, animal welfare and tresspass, along with various others.
The farmer was eager to catch them at it, but with so many child/adult laws- what can he possibly do once he has caught them? Touching them would be an absolute no no, and in a school of over 1000, he would have a job giving a description.

The trouble is I expect that the kids that are responsible couldn't care less and will probably double their efforts to put things in the field - especially since the Police visit, as sadly they probably think you are rich, stuck up snobs as you have horses - which in their minds makes it ok. Sad world isn't it?

OMG thats just shocking, disgusting and unbelievable and i dont know what to say.
I used to find broken beer bottles in my ponies field where it bordered with a playing field used for teenagers to drink in at night (under the trees that made the border line) I was shocked and worried by this but your story really puts that into perspective- at least my teenage monsters were just lazy and thoughtless.
This shows thought and planning and i am truly repulsed that people would do this.
I hope somehow you manage to sort it out xx

Thta's awful. I can't say I am too shocked - a good few years ago, a local girl dumped her boyfriend as he said me or the horse. She chose wisely! He went to the field, poured petrol over her veteran horse and set it on fire. Luckily horse was wearing a rug and although had severe burns, survived :-(
The local community were disgusted and donated rugs and money for the horse.
We couldn't escape lessons, the head drove round at lunch to check nobody was out

absolutely shocking. Sickening. Can you put an electric fence up?....wired to the nearest over head power cable... lil bastards have no respect for anyone anymore.

I'm speechless, that's disgusting. Even people at my school wouldn't dream of doing that and they couldn't give a hoot, but they know that's going too far.

Hope you catch and stop the little buggers

Its just worrying that there is only ever so much you can do to protect them without keeping them in 24/7 for fear their fields will be in some way booby trapped

Glass bottles are bad enough, but deliberately sticking glass in the ground is just so sick. At the moment we are thinking of moving them up to mine, just to give them some decent turn out. If they had trod on that glass this morning they would have been lame for life and without a doubt have to be pts.

that is disgusting. wtf is it with these feral little scummies? you were absolutely right to go to the police. i think i'd ask the head if i could address the whole school at assembly... or ask the police to.
i'd be beyond livid. thank GOD you noticed it.

That is horrific!! And to actually go back, and do it again with scissors!! WTF, sick bastards. Def agree with electric fencing- possibly along with some graphic notices describing what will happen if they do it again, tw@ts.

How awful. I think its bad that the head didn't take it seriously - telling people its an over reaction isn't exactly good PR.
Good call on getting police involved. Agree farmer should be wary of taking things into his own hands in this day and age.
I hope the polce and school take this seriously. The head needs to realise that they have a duty of care to pupils when they are on school time, not to mention need to do everything possible to prevent criminal damage.

OMG - well done you for going to the police, the little shits, they should be taught some bloody respect, for animals and themselves - i am totally gobsmacked by that head teacher.
I would be tempted to put an electric fence up - and a CCTV if you catch them on that the police surley can charge them with something, it beggers belief that this passes as entertainment for them

OMG, I am so so soo angry, i can barely type. WTF, HOW could anyone be this sick? It's fcuking disgusting! Seriously THESE are the type of kids that would grow up to be murderers or something and i know it sounds like an overreaction but if they think nothing of trying to seriously injure or kill a horse.....arghhhh.

I think i'd be dubious about putting the horses back into this field EVER again, even with fences up. If you do, definately invest in some CCTV and electric fencing etc.

I cannot believe the head, but then i can, with a head like that no wonder the kids are totally undisciplined and unruly. Really hope you get it all sorted and horses are ok.x

Put a high voltage shock on the fence.

Then sit and laugh.

+1

Actually put two electric fences down, so they can't avoid them
grin.gif

The discussion of electric fences in mesh form was a serious option (as they can't be climbed over or under- they are used in poultry farms) but again- kids as sick as to stick glass shards in the ground may be able to find a way of using fences to shock horses- the worry of the horse's safety now seems a constant- CCTV would be a bitter sweet if it only records a disaster unfolding, unfortunately I am too dubious we will turn out in there again for a long while.

That is disgusting

Can you or the farmer not hang around near the field with a shotgun and when you see them fire some shots up in the air? Just explain that you were shooting rabbits/pigions.....
