When I fell off and duffed my finger up out hunting Donkey also duffed her hock up – came up huge and puffy – worse in the mornings than evenings after she has been out all day.

She was well enough to taz around the field though. To be on the safe side after 10 days I had the vet out, who prescribed bute and if no better in 5 days they would come out an xray. Of course I was not happy with the hock still so vet came out and x-rayed – and I swear the next morning the ruddy hock was back to normal! However to be on the safe side thought I would give her the rest of the week off and start riding her again on Saturday. Saturday came and in the afternoon it was foul so I brought her in and could not be arsed to ride – groomed her, whilst grooming her tum – she loves her tummy being groomed I noticed a lump around the girth area – further investigation – it’s a tear about 3” long – hose pipe on – and it’s deep so vet called.

It was obviously a very fresh wound and I think she did it to herself rolling. Vet wanted to clip the hair around it – without full sedation and a huge army that was not going to happen. So I have been told to keep her on antibiotics and bute and to hibiscrub and cold hose twice daily – this morning it did look much better but there is still heat.

What else can I do to to stop infection, get it to heal fast??

We had our first show on the 13th – Cleveland Bay show so I am gutted.

She is on box rest but I will dress her in her lycra gimp suit tonight (to keep dirt out of it) and lunge her as the vet said movement is good for it and she is not getting out of work. She is happily box resting next door to the lovely Tonto (Dancer 99) who is on a months box rest. Will also graze her tonight – just cannot let her roll and get dirt in it.

I am so glad I did not ride her as I think I might have been sent into the next county, and she is being amazing letting me prod, poke, cold hose and hot wash it with out a complaint.

Any suggestions for healing and mending please!!

I'm sure she will heel quickly But, still sending her lots of heeling vibes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No advice SSM - I am sure that you are doing everything right to help her heal quickly. But hugs to you and Donkey. It's horrid when there is something wrong with them.

I use intracite gel for most cuts, it has an antibiotic in it and it really really helps to heal quickly. You can only get it through your vet and mine is always happy to give me a tube or two.
I used it on a nasty overreach once and it healed in a few days.

Oh honey, sounds as though you are doing all the right things and fraid the rest is in the hands of the gods. sending you loads of ((((((((((HEALING VIBES)))))))))). I'm sure it will be fine by the 13th.....

Sounds like you're doing it all - but I would want to clip the area myself.

++++++ for a swift recovery on it's way flower.

So where do I get aloe vera gel and do I just slap it on?

Tack shop. And yep, just slap it on.

If you are unable to clip the area, you could always trim the hair around the wound with a pair of scissors. I have had to do this before on a horse I couldn't clip

it does seem to aid the healing as well

Oh no, Im not the only one with bad luck then, When my little ones belly strap got caught round his back leg last year I used aloe gel, he already had a barbed wire scar in the same place and that aloe gel did a brill job! You cant even see his baberd wire scar now!!

Oh no - just seen this! So sorry for you and Donkey

Lots and lots of hot salt water until the wound has knitted and is dry - then camrosa. Ice had a nasty cut to his head some years ago which needed stitching and being on the top of his head could not drain - I washed that wound religiously twice a day in hot salt water - it healed so amazingly quickly I could take the stitches out after 10 days.
Keep us updated with progress and fingers crossed for her
