Jees - louise - why does everything have to be so complicated?

OK, so I'm preparing for my new horse to come home, and as it's summer I really want him to be out 24/7. He'll be turned out with two mares, but now their owner has said that she wants hers in at night (due to weight worries) which is fair enough. There is also a pony but she is lami and so spends her life pretty much in an open yard with hay. So I'm stuck at night. What do you think is worse? Him being stuck in a 15 x 15 stable at night or him being out with a few sheep only through the night? I know that lamis are often turned out at night because fructans are at their lowest, but there's still a risk right? Thanks guys.

I think it depends on your horse and whether or not he settles without having any friends around, mine would be quite chuffed with a 15 x 15 stable tho.....

it is all down to routine,he may stress a little,he may be fine, but once he gets to know what he is doing it should be fine!Have known many horses happy with sheep for company

,if he has a feed at all give him it in the field as he is turned out, honestly he will be fine!!

He'd be in if he were mine. Most horses hate being on their own - why risk the damage by him potentially going mental in their field on his own??

Sorry i misread??Is your horse at risk of lami???If not and he is out 24/7 then he will soon learn that others come in,he stays out, mine did and happy as a pig in shite, lol, once the better weather comes my lad dosnt want to come in

Think it would depend on the horse. He may be happy on his own, he may not like being stabled, or he might prefer to be stabled. Sorry, difficult question to answer without knowing the horse.

No, my horse isn't laminitic but the pony is. Hence, she can't go out at night but was wondering if it would be safe for her to be out at night. She won't wear a muzzle mind you. Thanks a lot for your comments - it's a difficult one isn't it?

See how he goes,as i said above he may well take to your routine, especially as he wont have formed a bond with any of the horses, alot of horses just need company and sheep supply that, providing they dont freak him out

??
My lad loves being out in the summer and couldnt give a monkeys who is with him (which has been nobody for a few months,at night)as long as he has his feed last thing when the others have been brought in,he waits patiently in a morn from 8.30 for his field buddy

they are all different and you need to try him out

good luck, hope it works out for you

My boy is perfectly fine being out on his own in the summer happy to go into the field on his own or stay there if other leave. Come the winter and the early dark nights completely different story and he goes mad if he's left in the dark! Big Woofter LOL.

Would your horse be able to have access to the stable yard so that he could wander in and out or at least be able to see the others?

I think it depends on what keeps your horse sane !
I had terrible trouble with mine

She goes totally ape if she's left alone so to avoid any problems I found her a companion, best thing I did
