Compulsory Microchipping ?

http://www.indigocollartags.com/

I use these tags as they are flush with the collar and dont stand proud, I have lost so many in the past when the normal tags have got pinged off in hedges.

I know its not compulsory for dogs to wear collars at home but many dogs escape from the garden .

I really like those tags DG.... But H has a rolled leather collar (as a sinkky dog with a big neck it was the only one I could find that suited him) and so those won't work :(

Only other benefit is up the yard I know when I can't hear his tags jingling he's wandered off too far! lol!

I've heard of a link between microchipping and cancer in dogs - does anyone know anything about it? I plan to do a bit more reading about it before the compulsory microchipping comes in here in NI shortly but I was hoping some people on here will be able to rubbish the rumours for me ;)

There are been numerous studies but no proven link between microchips & cancer.

There was a big outcry when microchipping became compulsory for new horse passports but all the problem cases of microchip related lumps etc. could be explained by poor hygiene & implanter technique.

I have implanted over a thousand chips in dogs & cats over the past 12 years and of these none have reported any problems. Most wandering chips are from being implanted in the scruff or, as is common in Scandinavia, high up the neck.

I have never failed to find a chip when I know one is there but the record for me is of one in the groin of a Lab. (Swedish import)

Haven't read all the replies, so apologies if I repeat previous posts! Microchipping works for the responsible dog owner. Unfortunately, it will not work for those who couldn't give a stuff. Dog wardens appear to keep 9-5 working days and the police have absolved responsibilty of stray dogs, so who will be reponsible for the enforcement? Pounds already charge a fee for the recovery of a dog and the owners 'who couldn't give a stuff' couldn't give a stuff about their dog remaining in kennels.

I have to say I don't put my address on the tag either, I am paranoid that the people finding the dog and bringing it to the door to see how happy/grateful and tearey:o I am that they found my dog could then leave me wide open for them to try and nab my dog for a ransome.

I need those flat tage DG as OH keeps taping my whippey x greys to the collar to take him hunting at the crack of dawn:rolleyes:

I scanned a lot of dogs today, yes the chips migrate but if you only scan the base of the neck once and give up, well, then you are a bit of a berk IMO :p :o most owners who have their dogs scanned regularly will point me to the chip, they often end up in shoulders, chest, down the arm, down the back, they're easily found.
And none of the dogs are dropping like flies because they are chipped...

I and several others from here got into a row with someone on FB about the whole chipping/cancer thing, were trying to argue that lots of people feed their dogs food containing known carcinogens and no one thinks anything of it......

ok, What people do in the private of their own home is their own choice. H doesn't have his collar on at home when I'm here (although if I go out I put it on just in case)
They are at risk at home too! mine went missing when the kids left the gate open, she does have a chip but the vet she was taken too recognised her due to her name on the collar. Some people prefer to call the number on the collar rather than have to drive them to a vet. JMHO

that's why I put it on when I go out and leave him at home. He doesn't really use our garden and I don't have kids who could let him out ;)

It would be great if all dogs were chipped but I can't see how this would be enforced. I can't believe it really hurts I watched both my dogs get done and tbh I think the kennel cough vaccination causes more annoyance for them!

My dogs are already chipped because i think it offers best chance of getting a lost dog returned (they're also tattooed & wear ID tag), but i do wonder how they will make sure people keep their info on chip database up-to-date for it to be useful.

I chip all my homebred puppies and any 'rescues' that pass through my door. When I fill out the details on line I always include mine with the new owners so god forbid it doesn't get updated at their end then they have a back up. I think they are more likely to keep in contact with me and then at least the dog can be got back to them safely hopefully.

I think compulsory chipping is great, I especially think EVERY breeder should ensure that all the puppies are done. Maybe vets could do this cheaper though? It takes minutes so doesn't really justify the £20-30 charges I've seen. Maybe £10 to cover chip and time.

Totally agree on pricing but there are quite a lot of vets about here and at any one time there seems to be at least one doing an offer. Got the cats done for £10 each. Tess came chipped from Rescue and many many years ago Meg got chipped as part of a publicity stunt for the local council :)

to those of you leaving your dogs unsupervised in collars, be sure you get a quick release collar for that purpose. I have dogs that can jump high enough to reach door handles and it has been known for dogs to hang themselves by their collars, just like cats.

This is the reason why I don't leave mine in collars, have heard of this happening. Also a terrible story of 2 dogs playing, one got its teeth caught in the others collar and before the collar could be cut off the one dog had strangled.
