Hector Came in from the f ield lame on Monday, he had scraped his pastern and it was bleeding so I did the usual bandaged and box rest as it did feel hot and swollen and hes a bit mardy so I always think things are not quite as bad as hes making out, the scrape was superficial no deep cuts

Tuesday no improvment so booked vet and animalintexed etc, his leg was swollen up to the mid canon and again very lame

I asked vet she said cellulitis (sp?) and it was just a result of the scrape, so antibiotics and bute.

friday the leg had gone right down and she said fine for a little bit of turnout, he did hoon around but was again sound yesterday

But this morning although the swelling has almost gone he was v hot again around the pastern and hoping lame, he has 1 more day of Anti Bs and bute left

My question is do you think theres something else there causing the lameness ? I asked vet she said no, but Ive never seen a horse with such a mild cut/scratch be so lame?

thanks

He may have banged it charging around the field and it has stiffened up overnight? Was he better after turnout today or did you keep him in? The only other thing i can think of is that he has got an infection in the joint but this seems highly unlikely given that it was only a scrape on the pastern

Either the infection is worse and needs stronger antibiotics or there is something else going on - either way - vet first thing tomorrow. Anything that is getting worse would worry me.

yeah I thought same I called vet this morning and shes out first thing tomorrow, unfortunately I cant get time off today now by the time she called back but she is also concerned that he is as lame as he is. Im worried because hes on one bute but still struggling in walk to put weight on it.

There was some gunk but only a small amount came off on the animalintex but its quite nicely scabbed over so I picked them off and re poulticed to see if its still infected and bandaged

Are your anti-bs powder or injection? I've always treated cellulitis with the needle. And yes, a bump that has barely broken the skin can lead to extreme pain with cellulitis.

we are now 3 weeks in and 3rd week of antibiotics

I had another vet from the same practise out as the first one wasnt on call. She first thought splint fracture which I posted about in new lounge.

His swelling has gone down but theres still some where, he has a noticeable small hard lump on just above his fetlock so this would be the lower part of the splint bone? i beleive

he got chased by a dog yesterday so today although better keeps going more lame then ok then lame hes not being bandaged as vet advised against

so we are getting there but still it seems strange we dont exactly know what it is. They wanted him in this week but because its sort of responded that has been moved to monday for x rays if not better
