Concord Cassie Shetland Pony Stolen TODAY in Shropshire

Definitely not gone for a stroll.

We do know she was taken in the boot of a 4x4 and the number plates had been removed.
Ah, now that is additional information to this thread which sheds new light on her disappearance.

My first thought when I read the OP was that she had somehow escaped.

Glad she's back and relatively unscathed.

I confess I am somewhat appalled by the number of 'know-it all' comments here. Horse and dog thieves are really enjoying your 'support'!!

There are barely any horse thefts these days Janet, and there haven't been for years since passports were introduced. It scares horse owners really badly to suggest that horses which have been taken as part of a dispute or the more common reason for missing horses, straying, have been stolen.

So unless information has been given which shows the horse has actually been stolen, I always point out on these threads that it's very unlikely. For other people's peace of mind.

Dogs now that's a different story now they're worth so much.

Yes, she was standing in the yard, all other horses in stables. ? another Shetland pony was almost stolen in May from very close by in the middle of the day too but they were disturbed by walkers who called the police.

I am really pleased for you that the power of the Internet got her back. You must have been out of your minds with worry.

It's a pity that posters didn't take the word of the OP, rather than requiring 'further information' when she said that the pony had been removed from the yard at a specific narrow time. Presumably she knows the set up of the yard and knows that it would have been impossible for the pony to have 'wandered off' under its own steam.

I am very pleased that the pony has been recovered.

The trouble for small mini's is they are being seen more as pets, not equines, easily transportable in the back of the car, and tv has perhaps made them another consumer item. Two recent UK programmes feature them, one Brassic shows the characters trying to steal a palomino Shetland to order, and a quick browse of youtube there are plenty of videos where they are treated almost like dogs.
I find it disturbing that people find it cute to bath a mini foal in the kitchen sink.
I think they are far more likely to be stolen than the average horse, they are a lot easier to hide.

I saw that episode of Brassic and I did laugh I'm affraid! They painted it black so they could take it to a show to fit in - I don't think they realised just how right they were in that respect ?? but the show class itself was not very well done - blue rope halters, people wearing every day clothes and going round the ring in the wrong direction ???

A palamino/cremello shetland is worth more than a black or chestnut if it were stolen - princess barbie coloured ponies ? and are probably stolen more frequently than any other type or colour of horse or pony.

I know of a few people who insist their ponies have been stollen. One was a piebald shetland stallion that the owner insists the travellers had taken. She went to Appleby with a microchip scanner and really upset a lot of people by accusing them of stealing her pony! Turns out she hadn't been to see her ponies for 4 days as she was away and the local farmer was doing a drive by to make sure they all had 4 legs and weren't spurting blood. He had no idea how many ponies were supposed to be there. They were also on 40 acres. 3 weeks later the ponies body was found wedged in a ditch way out the back of the field where they had suposedly looked dozens of times ...

And the only part of your post that is accurate, ycbm, is that stolen dogs are worth more. Passports are typical of too many 'bits' of fringe legislation that are a bad joke!.. Not least because many horses start their lives with 'fake' passports, and new owners often don't BOTHER to complete the 'change of ownership'. I know - about 20% of my home-bred 'babies' are still on the database 10 years later as belonging to me! Even though most of them are still with the owner I sold them to!! A LOT of shows don't bother to check passports - and the police couldn't give a damn (unless they're reported stolen!) Chips can be removed from stolen horses - but it may be the first time their chip has been found! Even pure-breds that HAVE to be chipped can 'lose' their chip - or have it 'looked for' by a vet whose scanner is having a bad day!

There are MANY more reports of a “stolen” horse that is eventually found dead in a ditch/on a railway line or wherever.

I actually noticed this a lot when we were trying to get the message about. The other ones I saw a lot of were.. “my horse was stolen between March and April and sold to a dealer” which then turned out to be, horse has been effectively abandoned on a yard with no payment of livery so sold. ?

There are also some sold while on loan. What there aren't, now that it costs money and creates an audit trail to replace a passport and redo a chip, is many horses stolen from yards and fields like your baby was. The only genuine two I've heard of in many years are yours and another tiny.
