So my daughters had her eye on the Concours D'elegance classes for a while she thinks there beautiful. I've the classes before when i've been out showing but have absolutely no idea about. Do they do the concours classes for lead rein/first ridden and if so what's involved with the class. I'm completely clueless so any advice is much apprectiated.

Hmm ok so it's been a while since I was on the show scene now, but yes they certainly did LR/FR Concours classes. Generally a 'period' type outfit is wanted (though I've seen all sorts ). From memory the class only really called for a walk round and maybe a trot, can't remember if we ever had to do an individual show. Maybe go and watch a couple of classes and see whats needed?

We did a lead rein concours class at a local show back in September. It was our first show ever and we were the only ones in the class! We decided to go for that one rather than the usual M&M l/r in tweeds as pony had a bad start in life and has burn scars on her rump, so the costume covers these and my sewing skills are decent enough that I knew I could make an outfit for cheaper than buying one (they can be £££!) We were the first class of the evening performance, went in had a walk around, judges called us in and asked my daughter, who is 3 a couple of questions about her and her pony then had us walk around again before calling us in for the rosette. We are hoping to do some more next season as there are usually a couple of classes locally and have plans for upgrading our outfits - I have already bought a jacket to match daughters and will be making a bigger hat bow for her.

Aww she looks so cute bless her heart!! Well done on the outfit it looks great my daughters already got her eye on an outfit she would like from a lady that makes them but your right the price of some of them is rather alot. Think i might have to get one of the basic outfits first there a little bit cheaper see how she gets on.

Thank you I've seen some pictures of some different outfits for concours but luckily my daughter has seen a very pretty traditional outfit that she would like. I think your right i'll have to head out to some shows see what it's all about.

Thank you! It was actually pretty easy to find bits to pull the outfit together online. Her jacket is a black velvet quilted one originally from M&S with gold buttons and I just sewed some lace frills on to the collar and cuffs. Its a style that was popular in the 80's and regularly pop up on ebay or in charity shops. Her skirt was actually made from an adults bridesmaids dress also from ebay and I am wearing the matching bolero it came with along with a skirt I found from a vintage costume suppliers shop on ebay and a black lace top I already had. My skirt was the most expensive bit of the whole lot and I think I did the whole lot including a new leather lead rein and show cane for just over £100! Even when I start wearing my matching jacket next year I have skimped on the cost of buying a frill neck lead rein shirt (£40!!!) by getting one of these fake collars to wear underneath it with just a vest top or something:

If you can pick up the other bits on sites like ebay then you might just need to get the concours skirt made rather than a whole outfit?

It depends in the show and who is judging as to how much you have to do. I have done everything from a walk round to a full on class of walk trot canter, individual show with a gallop. Obviously the lead reins will only walk and trot. First ridden ls say to the steward as you go in so they don't canter as a group.

Thank you i think she'll be best off doing lead rein to start with see how she gets on

I’ve just read the rules on Concours d’Elegance Great Britain. Apparently it’s historic traditional costume (not ‘fancy dress’) & the cut off date is up to 1950. I saw this ridden class for the first time last weekend & wondered what the criteria for judging was so looked up the rules. Interesting. Pay attention to detail if you plan on doing this class.
