Hi all

Not posted for literally years.

Have finally managed to buy a field in walking distance of house and have planning in at moment for stable block.

Have had a quote for putting in concrete yard of 52ft x 38ft and adjoining hardstanding 30ft x 38ft with drainage round edge . New gateway and running water 100m from meter to 2 points in concrete..

Been quoted 24k Inc vat by someone who I know and is good but this does seem high. Stables are coming in at 12.5k.

I am getting another quote but does his quote seem in the right ball park?

I was hoping for sub 20k on groundwork..

Im in somerset and there is an 18 tonne limit on railway bridge access.

Thanks all in advance

I couldn't tell you exactly amounts off the top of my head but I work in construction and the costs of everything, including concrete, has sky rocketed.

I think 24k including VAT is the right ballpark.

My parents have a 20 x 40ft shed they wanted to concrete. The quote pre covid and brexit was 10k. Not had a quote since but expecting it to be double based on the industry and thst it such a small job.

Thanks, really want him to do it but OH was bit shocked at price. I'm getting another quote but wanted to check right ball park.

6 years ago the groundwork for my little yard was twice the cost of the actual stables and the price (and availability) of concrete has increased dramatically since then. That said, I'd always get more than one quote, but would pay a bit more if it meant using a known, trustworthy person

Thanks all. Has put mind at ease, will get second quote but go with first if only couple thousand in it as know his work.

I did look at mud control slabs but quite an outlay if they don't suit. Horses have open fronted stables so they can come and go so don't think mats would cope with them trudging mud in from field...would end up a mess and need constant topping up with sand... if had them on parking area not sure hoe much cheaper than hardcore as would still need drainage and ground prepared!

Hopefully this is last time I do this as so close to house so want to get it right and have as little maintenance as possible!!

My loafing area is alongside the barn and they have free access. I have found that in wet/muddy conditions they leave the unmatted area of the loafing area alone and stand/walk about on the mats. They would bring far more mud inside without the mats.

We had concrete and hardcore with road planings put down last September. It was around 100 square metres but concrete slab down for stables - 3 x 12x12, 6x12 tack room and 12x24 hay store. It cost around 12.5k but included 3 gates and some fencing.
