Excuse my ignorance but what actually is concussion? I got a kick to my head today and several people have mentioned concussion. Obviously it's one of those things I'm supposed to know but feel a tad stupid so haven't asked! :-/

Concussion is what you may experience after a trauma to the head. So, if you are experiencing headaches, dizziness or just a general feeling of fuzziness I would go to your A&E and get yourself checked out. In any case, try to make sure that someone is with you for the next 24 hours just in case....you MAY feel fine now, but sometimes the onset can be delayed.

Years ago I went XC schooling and took a tumble at an 'into space' from which you can allegedly see four counties on a good day. Got back on and did rest of course with my two friends....however, I was constantly and repeatedly asking 'where are we' and 'what day of the week is it'? If you had asked me at the time, I felt fine....but obviously wasn't as I can't remember anything about it or the subsequent visit to A&E.

Take care.

Perhaps you are concussed?!

It's when your brain gets rattled. Hurts and you may have confusion. You should go to the hospital to get checked out with any head injury.

Thanks, it happened this morning and I'm sure I'm ok- was just like I say several people mentioned it and then I started to get a bit worried! What happens if concussions not treated? Or for that matter how is it treated?

I've been concussed three times (!) most severe: no
Memory of events up to coming off and landing on head, rambling, confused and repetitive questions (appararently
Was a nightmare for my friend driving me to a&e) then felt
ill and lethargic for about a week.

Least severe- head ache, short term memory loss and generally feeling ill

If it was this morning, you feel ok and no problems with sight, memory coordination etc then save yourself a trip- they'll keep in for three hours and pack you off home... But if you feel weird then go to be on the safe side x

Whenever I have had concussion the main symptoms don't develop until the next day. If I move my head the whole room spins (at speed) making me pass out and be sick - I literally can't move my head. This has lasted for up to a week.

I also suffered some confusion for up to a fortnight (although I didn't know it) - it was everyone around me who realised something was still wrong.

Be very careful.

I got extremely mild concussion the other week, when I fell off Ned. I couldn't remember what happened and had a headache for just over a week.

I would go to get checked out, if I were you. I was only in there for 20 mins and she gave me a sheet of things I should look out for.

Concussion - from the NHS website.

I've had it a few times. (I should probably wear a helmet permanently! Ranging from the sensation shortly after, where.... Best way I can describe it is if your head was a bell, it would still be ringing (if you go BONGGGGGG like a bell....it's the GGGG bit) to knocking myself unconscious, having no idea what I was doing for two days, and no memory of what happened. (apparently I fell off my bike, I got sent home from work the next day when I just started taking plates of food to completely random tables!)
Usually it's just a case of rest for a while - no physical exercise and don't think too hard.

BUT, and it's a big one... If you have concussion, we don't know how bad it is from a post on a website, so please make sure there's someone around IRL to look after you tonight at least.

I banged my head once badly (not horse related) but as had cuts too went to casualty. Their advice in case of concussion, (I felt vile though lucid/not dizzy/not sick or anything) was to ensure I was with someone that evening, because I lived alone as I think the effects of concussion can be delayed (can't remember if that's right or not but they gave me a leaflet!) or if felt any different to go back. So I would say get checked out at the doctor's or elsewhere. Heads are very important things :)

I had concussion a few years ago after getting walloped on the head by a helicopter skid (long story!). I actually didn't show any symptoms bar a thumping headache for 24 hours. Then i threw up so violently I burst blood vessels around my eyes, became confused and my memory of the incident became a bit muddled. My mum insisted I got checked out and was home from a&e within a few hours (after a head scan and xrays) with a sheet of instructions. I would always tell people never to mess around with your brain. Get it checked. Its better to be safe than sorry.

^^^this, a few years ago a girl fell offon the Newmarket gallops, seemed OK, went to bed early, and never woke up. So if you are unsure, get someone to check you over every three or four hours.

I fell off in a jumping lesson a couple of years back, got back on, jumped the course again perfectly... then slithered off and crumpled on the floor crying because I didn't know where I was and I how I got there..... Went to hospital with concussion, and also found out I slightly moved a vertebrae in spine. Still can't remember any of it!
