I was just wondering how much you think your horses winter coat affects how he looks?

I always worry, as I have a cob who is not a good doer in winter (he needs the summer grass) that though he looks OK, he's actually worse under his thick coat. He gets ad lib hay, and feeds, but if I fed him any more food he'd go nuts (even though he's on quiet mix)

Is there anyway of keeping an eye on condition which wouldn't be affected by it?
I generally keep an eye on his backend, as this seems to get skinny first, and on the side of his bottom, when he's not quite "fat" enough, his hindquarters hollow in slightly.

So yeah, any tips on keeping an eye on condition, and whether the hair will disguise skinnyness.

Also, I seem to get very different opinions about cobs' condition in general.
I would say that my boy is slightly skinny for his type at the moment, his bottom has lost a bit of weight and his hindquarters have hollowed slightly. However, this will change very quickly in the next few weeks when the grass comes through!
However, some people think his condition at the moment is fine, and that really cobs just tend to be fat..

any opinions or tips appreciated.
