I'd be interested to know what you think of my mare's condition. Personally I think she's a good weight but I can't help thinking her coat looks a bit poor, I've always prided myself in keeping her gleaming and shiny and she just doesn't seem to be this year

This pic was taken today, I know its not great but its a very dull day and my camera phone doesn't like poor light. What do you think and is there anything I can feed her to improve her coat?

By contrast this is a pic from the summer... again a bad pic but this is how I like her to look lol

Considering the winter we have had so far, I think your mare looks a good weight. Are you feeding her any supplements at the moment? I use Kossolian blood salts at half the recommended dose as it's good stuff and my black mare is gleaming! One thing I also find helps the coat is to keep the rugs clean. I have a lightweight duo liner which goes under my mares stable rug and I wash it every week. That helps to ' polish' her coat and keep her clean too.

Hi...I think your mare looks fine to me. All horses and ponies look dull over winter and theres nothing worse when they've had a few days out in the fields and are covered in mud...even when they do have rugs on they still seem to get it all over them lol

I've fed my sec.c ground, toasted linseed this winter to improve his coat condition for summer, especially as i've clipped this year too so fingers crossed it helps! As long as her weight stays fine and she getting all her vits and mins when the weather starts to pick up her dapples will shine through and her shine will return

She's a good weight for this time of year, so don't worry too much about that

If you want coat shine, then an oil based feed/supplement will help. Cooked linseed/linseed oil is excellent for this.

She's on ad lib hay and a small amount of winergy low energy just to get her supplements down her (pink powder and extraflex HA). Not sure what else I can feed her without weight gain which she doesn't need!

Has she got a different rug on this winter? I've found the amount of shine they have depends greatly on their rug!

She's a good weight and if she's got plenty of enegry and seem to be feeling fine then stop worrying!

You don't need to feed much linseed for it to have an effect, so if you're concerned about her getting abit porky then that could be an option. Either that or swap her Winergy for Alfa Oil

Actually I think a few of you have hit on a good point, I didn't have her rugs cleaned this year so they are probably a bit greasy and yukky inside which can't help

She's a bit picky with feed and supplements and isn't too keen on Alfa Oil but I might look at mixing a small amount in or adding some linseed/oil ... glad her weight seems to be OK anyway

I have been using Event Supplement for 8 months now and I cannot believe the shine on my lot at the moment! It's administered via a syringe every 2 months which is very handy when you don't want them on hard feed.

I think she looks a good weight.
I feed my cob vegetable oil, apparently it's good for joints and shiny coats!
The same as cod liver oil basically which we used to use but someone pointed out to me 'Cod Liver Oil is basically fish, horses are herbivores, they wouldn't eat fish in the wild...'
Or something along those lines...which does make sense really...
