my thoroughbred mare is in need of abit of weight gsin before next years showing season. she isnt skinny but just recently noticed shes a tiny bit ribby due to the lack of winter turnout. i want to get some good conditioning feed to put on some more weight and get my top line back but..shes very easily fizzed up and couldnt cope with her on something that was a high energy source so now im at a loss.

does anybody know any very good conditioning feeds that wont throw her over the edge.. she is a show/dressage horse and needs her behaviour at her best haha. thanks.

I feed my tbs equimins advance complete and linseed, they all have bellys :) linseed is fab for weight gain. I feed a heaped mug full twice a day.

Calm and Condition did nothing for my mare. She became lethargic and didn't add condition.

Love Topspec, use their balancer and cool conditioning cubes. Within a week it has made a drastic improvement. Cannot rate their customer service highly enough either.

And as much hay she can eat!

Add lib haylage/hay with some allen and page conditioning cubes - although the only way you're going to build decent topline is through exercise really - I think most gg's are lacking in muscle due to the increadibly soggy conditions even with turnout so I would have thought a bit of spring grass will also help before the showing season starts!

I'm not at all an expert on this subject, but I would say if she's losing weight due to the more restricted turnout, could you not give her more forage alongside the feed? Plenty of hay or haylage is always an important starting point for weight gain.

 This has puzzled me. Why should lack of winter turnout mean your horse has lost weight? Is she stressy in the stable? All mine would GAIN weight with less turnout and being stood in with hay or haylage. They would be obese.

Forget all the condtioning feeds. Get some really good quality haylage that your horse cannot get enough of and feed that ad lib, along with a basic feed for vitamins and minerals.

Another vote for grass nuts, try Simple Systems. My hot head, looses weight at the drop of a hat Tb has never looked so good or been so laid back since he's been onthese. C&C sent him through the roof.

Ad lib good quality haylage and feedwise either Pure Condition or Rowan and Barbary now do a Solutions Mash which is a low sugar/starch feed but will add condition.

Best thing for my poor doer is absolutely ****loads of haylage and then either linseed or sunflower oil in her feed. Last year she had pure condition with speedibeet and sunflower oil. This winter speedibeet with micronised linseed and pro-hoof for vits and minerals

Allen & Page Calm & Condition!! Great stuff!

C&C did nothing for any of the horses I have used it with. Awful stuff for weight gain! Micronised linseed, speedibeet and coolstance are good options, would have reccomended alfa a oil but that will send him through the roof!

We have always found this is great to put weight on without getting fizzyness especially for tbs...

ad lib hay /hayledge or half and half depending what you can get

1 large round scoop of cool mix
slosh of oil
1 scoop of general purpose supplement or pink powder (only in 1 feed per day)
1 large round scoop of flaked barley

up to you if needed once or twice a day depending on weigh gain needed or miss out the barley for the 2nd feed etc.....

Hope it helps
