I am looking for a feed to give my 19yr old hunting sporty cob to help him along this nasty winter. He’s out 24/7 which suits him perfectly all apart from he’s dropped more weight than I’d like. He gets hay in field, 1 cup of lo cal balancer, 1 scoop light chaff and then Neighked buck off and skin tonic.
We tried bulking his feed up with what the others are on if they need it ie sugarbeet, speedibeet, fibre beet, performance balancer, Alfa A + Alfa A oil. All of which make him a fire breathing bucking bronco. I like his temperament on this feed but need something to give him more bulk! Any ideas? He is on Ad lib hay, rugged properly etc. Thankyou!!

I may have been lucky but have never had sugarbeet or alfalfa send any of mine bonkers. In your case oil could be your friend. Some years ago my vet suggested adding supermarket vegetable oil but I think that is now frowned on ? Micronised linseed or something like Omega Rice could be good.

I'm probably sounding like a broken record as I've recommended it so many times on here recently but I swear by Omega rice. A bag lasts me a month for one horse so it ends up being very cost effective as well.

Would you say this is better than micronised linseed for avoiding any fizz? Thanks.

Coolstance Copra is great for weight gain, gives them a lovely shine to their coats and hasn't hotted up any horses that I know who have had it x You need to be careful with the phosphorus:calcium ratio but it's a great feed all round and I really rate it!

Grass nuts are another great option - every horse I know has loved having them in their feed and I've known them to be great for weight gain.

Omega Rice is a mix of micronised linseed and rice bran - I personally haven't used this product, but a few people I know who have say it's really cost effective, the horses love it and it puts condition on beautifully :) x

I won’t feed Alfa, think it makes everything nuts/itchy. It’s quite coarse for their stomachs too.

Could you feed straights? Oats are great for condition.
