Hi Guys,

I debated on whether posting this would be a good idea.... but here we are!

I am the "author" of the latest blog on the H&H website. If you haven't already read it (who am i trying to kid?) you can have a look at it here: *NEW* Confessions of a fledgling stable lad: ‘I realised I had no clue how to muck out’ - Horse & Hound (horseandhound.co.uk)

Would love to hear any feedback, positive or negative, I expect more of the latter! It would also be great to hear any stories regarding your experiences in the racing industry. Happy to answer any questions too!

Along with my two days a week at the racing stable, I have a Mon to Friday too. Essentially, I'm working 7 day weeks while to learning to ride my own horse. I haven't yet decided if I want to be the next Frankie Detorri or Carl Hester....

Thanks.

p.s.

I'm looking for any kind of horse-related experiences.... do get in touch.....

If you thought that was sarcasm I'm very sorry. It was supposed to be a genuine compliment that you write well.

ETA i don't tend to do sarcasm, there's far too much already on this forum ime.
.

Ah! Apologies. Thanks for your kind words. I have become incredibly wary of horsey people in the past year..... all while slowly turning into one....

I absolutely loved it! More please!!! Would you mind turning it into a book and this is just the first page?
(But please don't call it 'Confessions of a Fledgling Stable Lad' because that would put me off...).

Well written, with correct grammar and spelling (increasingly rare these days).
I enjoyed the gentle humour, and your ability to share your personality through your writing.

TBH I stopped reading H&H because it seemed full of stories of dreadful accidents, conflicts in the industry, scandals etc.
If there were more contributions like this, I might start buying it again.
P.S. I DO do sarcasm, but there's not a word of it above :).

What a lovely thing to say! I am genuinely glad that you enjoyed it.

I do struggle with my grammar and punctuation at times! Fortunately, it's far easier to compose a grammatically correct sentence with all the wonderful tools that are now available!

One day I would love to write a book. I have a great story about a supposedly friendly horse in Iraq (that's a whole book on its own) that my friend tried to back - it ended up biting a chunk out of her arm... an interesting trip to an Iraqi A&E!

At the moment I am concentrating on gaining as much horsey-knowledge as possible in a small timeframe. I was lucky enough to grow up with stables, training schools, and horses in my back garden but I never took any interest! I’m paying for that now in more ways than one!

My goal is to be able to comfortably and safely ride lots at any racing yard that will have me. I would also like to compete in the Golden Button at some point (no half-measures here) If anyone fancies helping me reach these goals – do get in touch…. I'm always up for a challenge....

Racing can be a tough game but also a very rewarding one. Yes yards can be bitchy but that is nothing compared to the majority of livery yards! Stick with it! You will enjoy it!

I have been doing a blog on here randomly over the last few years entitled - A Day In The Life Of A Work Rider. I've worked in racing for nearly 17 years now.

I have just had a look at some of your posts. Really interesting.

I would classify myself a "worker" and can easily say this is the hardest job I have done. I do not understand how the full time staff work 14 days on the trot. You require some serious mental strength. I am essentially working 7 day weeks at the moment and it is getting rather tough.... it's only the love of horses and the learning that keeps me turning up.

I think a tiny percentage of people can hack it full time in racing. From what I have heard, staff turnover at racing yards can be huge when newbies join from BRS.

I have a lot of respect for yard staff that do this day-in-day-out.

Edit:

Just to double-down on the above comment. I am the last person to feel the need to congratulate someone for a job that they are paid to do. However, the dedication of the fulltime staff at my yard is insane, its incredibly impressive and has really made me question my own work ethic etc. Obviously I would never mention this to them!
