It is not often I venture into the world of Dressage. When I do it is kicking and screaming, and quite simply because I have to !

So with Badminton just round the corner I felt I had better get a bit of extra practice in, so off I trundled to some evening dressage. Certainly not my first choice of Wedsnesday evening entertainment :p!

To say Jem was grumpy about proceedings was an understatement. To leave all the other horses in the yard stuffing themselves on haylege, and heading off in the lorry was clearly not her idea of fun. She made this quite plain by kicking in the lorry all the way there !

Off the lorry and tacked up we headed to the warm up, where Jem decided she only had 1 pace.....canter! So we cantered around for a while (she is feeling very fit!), until finally she allowed me to ride her. Made sure I kept her working right up until the test, and in we went for P14. Test felt ok, but heavy in the hand at times, but obidient, accurate and rhythmical. So felt fairly pleased with it, and aware of the areas which hadn't felt so good. Put Jem back on the lorry, as out next test wasn't until 8.52 !

Went to look at scores to find 54.6% ! I was mortified as I was 10% below everybody else ! Rather annoyed as I had felt the test had gone well, I headed back to the lorry to watch the beginning of Waterloo Road, before tacking up again for N30 (Jem's first Novice test). TBH I could quite happily have gone home as it was the same judge, and to say Jem was not impressed at being tacked up into dressage gear again would be an understatement ! Start warming up and Jem felt fab, really uphill and obidient. Mum then came to tell me I had come 3rd in the P14 (out of 16) and I had actually got 65.8%, which cheered me up nicely. Feeling that the evening might not be such a wash out after all I headed in to to do my test.

I felt it went really well, Jem felt much more uphill than in the Prelim, she was obidient and relaxed through the transitions, and really working in to a steady contact. I was pleased with her mediums and felt she really tried for me. The only not so good areas were my 1/2 10m circles which I rode badly, and the halt (4 secs at A), which Jem was more responsive than anticipated and halted early resting her hind leg. Came out feeling chuffed to bits with her :D!

Untacked and back on the lorry we waited for the scores to find I had got 63.8%, which left me 5th out of 8. TBH I was dissapointed with the mark as the test felt much better than the Prelim, but i'm not too bothered as it was an outing!

So now onto my musing. In the Prelim there was less than 5% dividing all 16 competitors. In the Novice there was less than 3% between all 8. Is this normal? I'm just relating it to eventing, but I don't think I have ever seen everybody have such close scores! Also when I got both my sheets every mark was a 6 or a 7. I know of at least 4 movements between the 2 tests I would have given myself a 4 or 5 , but I can also think of movements where I felt I should have scored better :o. After recieving a 6 for a movement, the following movement's comment was 'much better'. So why did I get another 6 for it ?

Sorry for my ramblings, I didn't get back until 11pm last night !

Well done, sounds like a good evening!

I was dressage stewarding at a BE event on Sunday and I was also thinking about the use of marks and comments in the judging. When I peeked at a couple of sheets, there tended to be an awful lot of 6s and 7s, a few 5s and even fewer 8s yet watching the tests there was a huge variation in how combinations performed. There were also unhelpful comments like "6 - straight" for a centre line - if it was straight, why a 6 and no other comment?

I do think that judges try to be too nice sometimes so they don't put comments that could be perceived as harsh (discussions over lunch supported this). Equally, they don't seem to give many 8s so the marks rest at the 6/7s point. It is a real shame as it's disheartening to see your marks stay the same despite apparent improvements.

some judges simply don't use the full scale of marks. I have had '6 - good' or similar several times. Well good = 8 according to the scale of marks ;)

And it happens eventing as well. One section I did last year had all 30+ competitors within 8%, or 5% if you discounted the best two and worst two riders after dressage! And because over half the section finished on DCs the top 20 riders were separated by only 7.5 penalties.

Well glad the first mark was wrong  I would find it impossible to believe the lovely Jem had got that low in a prelim!!!

And as for bizarre dressage scores and lack of variety don't get me started  I did actually manage one test that was ALL 6s. Now we are fairly consistent but you are not telling me there were not some bits we did better/ worse than others surely?!?

I can beat you on the bizarre scoring. 2 novice tests, a month apart, same test, same judge (BD) - identical marks and comments all the way down the sheet!!! Do you think she had a copy of the previous one??

:) brightstar now thats concistance :p

i got an all 7s before ,thought i'd just trump your 6s DHB :p

i agree i'm sick of judges just sitting saying 6-7-6-6-6-7-6-7--6-6-6- boring
one dressage comp i went to this winter there was only 4% between me and a test i stood and watched ,now i have been known to dabble in some judging ocasionaly and do addmit to standing watching thinking 2 -6 - 7etc now there was a massive difference between my test and the one i watched
one girl at the same venue won a test on 76% (ish) one week ,the next week didn't even get placed with 58% (ish again) wasn't me ;) ,the horse is consistent and did a symilar test, the rider was understandibly p*** off

i too wish judges would use all the marks available if necesary ,there is nothing more anoying than being dissheartened at a comp

more importantly ,all the best of luck for badders hope you have a briliant time :)

Haha I've just started a thread about this!! I love it when judges are bold with their marks, I got a 4 and an 8 in the same test at Isleham  but mostly it's the old 767676 syndrome... 'Could be rounder. Consistent. Whatever.' If I was a judge I'd be deadly honest... 'What was THAT?! That doesn't deserve to be in my arena! 2' 'Much better, clever pony, 8' :D

this is why i hate hate hate dressage...6/7 syndrome  i really don'tmind getting a 3 or a 4 if i do something really badly...but i want a goddamn 8 every now and then...like you say...if something is 'good' then it should be better than a 6!
well done anyway, sure you'll see the ebenfit when you get to badders :)
