People are rightly referring to the former of uses of the word. I don't understand the confusion?

Humour

Humour or humor (see spelling differences) is the ability or quality of people, objects, or situations to evoke feelings of amusement in other people. The term encompasses a form of entertainment or human communication which evokes such feelings, or which makes people laugh or feel happy. The origin of the term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally: juice or sap, metaphorically: flavour) controlled human health and emotion.

A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, a quality which all people share, although the extent to which an individual will personally find something humorous depends on a host of absolute and relative variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, and context. For example, young children (of any background) may possibly favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons e.g. Tom and Jerry. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour, and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences.[citation needed] Non-satirical humor can be specifically termed "recreational drollery".[1][2]

Also know in situations to "Lighten the mood". Of course, only applicable if people understand such.

Whatever mate. After reading that splurge, I have lost my sense of humour, along with any good humour I had when I woke up this morning!

I think thats probably why my horses/ponies rarely need their teeth doing.. They live out 24/7 365 days a year. They don't have hard feed..just hay in winter if necessary. They don't eat at an artifical height ie haynets/feeders which can effect the way the teeth wear down. They have access to hedges, trees and differents types of grass and are eating for as long as horses are designed to eat for.

Don't have routine back checks
Use a controller headcollar pretty much always
Put brown tack on a black horse (a cardinal sin!)
Don't get rugs washed very often (if ever!)

Oh, SN. I am not trying to start anything, in fact the opposite. Why do you have to be like that?

Because I'm finding it icreasingly frustrating when I try to help someone, who is repeatedly inflammatory. Sorry OP, but you do have the knack!! We all have it at times, but honestly.

Also, I was adding to your description of the word 'inflammatory' for the sake of others - I didn't appreciate being told that I have no sense of humour. Which infact I do normally have - in great quantaties - but it has now been stolen! Ta

I have stolen your sense of humour?

You asked why the confusion, on a post replied from one of mine (If it wasn't meant for me, then perhaps using QR on the post). So, in thinking you were asking why I was confused, I answered in the same vein as my previous post with quoting a dictionary. I was trying to have a joke, not at your expense either. I wasn't making out you had no sense of humour

I really think the retort was uncalled for.

I am a adult though, so I will apologise if my attempt to lighten the day and enjoy a thread, has offended you.

I did, this is true. Because, I believe - happy to stand corrected - that users had been quoting the word 'inflammatory' with a little confused icon next to it. You then quoted rightly from a dictionary, but without the section that I quoted from a thesaurus on the word, which I hoped would clear up the matter for the people who had been confused. What confused me was the reference to defammatory - I didn't make that clear - apologies for that.

Off to the ponies now - chat later!

Well, I barely lead my horse in a head collar, usually chuck a rope round his neck.
I open the gate in the winter and let the three go in on their own . If one goes in the wrong stable then whoevers stable it is usually kicks them out.
Never had a back person.
Worming must be due around now, but I think I will get a worm count done first.
I dont boil linseed, I let it steam itself.

Some people are a bit too anal about horses

I have ridden in wellies, I dont groom everyday. But everyone of my horses has or has a passport even the foal born in June has a passport. No excuse, get one, your horse may have an accident, what then? It's not big, & it's not clever. You are breaking the law. Lecture over, nice mare by the way.
ps by the way there are lots of things that we did/did not do years ago that time have shown were incorrect or could be done better. Teeth should at least be checked yearly. You will know if you have tooth ache your horse is not so lucky & may have a problem letting you know. Just find a decent dentist.
smirk.gif

Oh... re teeth thing...

I've been trying to insure my new horse since April, but due to PetPlan losing forms after form, blah de blah...

Anyway this week they finally 'did' the app form over the phone & read out the terms & conds...and one of them was that you have to have teeth checked once a year.

I'm afraid I don't usually read terms & conds as thoroughly as I should, but cos they read them I had to listen.

Not a prob for me cos my 2 are done every 6 to 9 months, but from now on I'll make doubly sure I keep my treatment diagrams/receipts. Having lost my last horse after a long, expensive & heartbreaking illness, I wouldn't want to do anything that might invalidate my insurance.

Just thought I should make everyone aware in case you don't read your terms & conds either!!!

[ QUOTE ]
im not sure i agree tho....i think the whole teeth and back thing has only come to the fore over the last few years or so....when i was in the pony club, no one EVER had the dentist out, and the first time we had someone it was for our yearling, who had a wolf tooth. maybe my opinion is unfounded, but i know many people who think similarly!

[/ QUOTE ]

But times have changed now, and increased care and knowledge is enabling horses to live much longer than they did even a few years ago.

In answer to your post, I don't see the big deal in you being a little overdue with worming. These advances in veterinary science also have their draw backs in that the over use of wormers has partially resulted in the parasites becoming resistant to the chemicals used in them. I do worm regularly, but not religiously.

As far as back and teeth are concerned - do try and sort the teeth issues out. If you click on Snowys Diary in my siggie, you will see why.
And imho, having a horses back done without seeing a vet first, is a complete waste of time. I have known countless people have their horses seen to, and rave on about how much better their horse is going, only for them to see a return of the probs shortly down the line. If you're concerned about your horses back, see a vet, and get a thorough examination done. If, after xrays or whatever, your vet suggests manipulation might help, then get a back person out.

Oh and my horsey crimes are that I don't poo pick enough and don't ride enough.
smile.gif

1. I don't always exercise Mickey enough and he likes his work
2. Sometimes my nerves stop us from doing some of the things we might otherwise do...........

Since when did a passport cost 20 pounds? We bought a passport-less pony, to get him passported meant having a vet out to 'identify' him, which cost us 60 pounds, and then the passport on top. I was told DEFRA have their own identification people, so I phoned one and she charged 20 pounds for her time, plus 15 pounds petrol costs. AND she only lived 20 mins away.

Although you do have all the come backs and all the smart answers its really yourself and your horse you are letting down.
Although your horse looks pretty and wonderful in the photo, thats all well until something goes wrong with her teeth and she starts bucking you off cause of the pain or the worming, although you have missed it, and alot of people would also admit they miss their worming programme now and again it is internally that matters with a horse just as much as the outside...its your vet bills you'll have to pay when things go wrong, not us...!
As for the passport I would be really careful who you go around saying that to and the fact it has just seemed to roll off the toungue that you dont have one isnt really something to boost about...again if you get fined, its you that has to pay it, not us...a passport is not just for horses going to slaughter....its for the government to check the horse is yours and soon if you want to move yards/fields or go to shows it will become a def that you have it.
So really although you say you dont care what people think, I believe you really do otherwise you wouldnt be bragging about what you dont have or adding these silly threads...your quite young so its best to just put it down as ignorance really.

It can be difficult to keep track of things like vaccinations so here's a link some of you might find helpful:

http://www.free-minder.com/

Although it's set up to send automatic reminders of birthdays and anniversaries etc you can put in any kind of reminder you want, and I've put in all my pets' vaccination dates. You could also put in worming dates, teeth, whatever would be useful.

I do wonder about all the teeth/back think and I'm not sure how much intervention is warrented and how much is a quick buck. My 'confession' is that until about 5 years ago I had NEVER HEARD of poo picking!! How bizarre is that. I've had horses over 20 years and I've probably been on close to 10 yards (a mix of farms and proper livery yards) and none of them poo picked until the one I moved to a few years ago.

She already has veterinary identification on her vaccination certificate.

QR,
My vet was telling me the other day about a 28yo stallion that hadnt had his teeth done for 10 yrs. His teeth were perfect, as he had lived out 24/7 for all that time on a total forage diet.
He was telliong me this as he rasped my broodmare, who hadn't been done for 2 years. His words were 'i'm only rasping for the sake of it really'.
As long as someone is capable of checking how the teeth are I have no problems with them not being seen to by a professional. It wasnt so long ago that horse dentists didnt even exist.
As for passports, I say stick 2 fingers up to Defra.
I have been going through a huge problem with the Oldenburg society this last few months regarding a passport. Basically the microchip number didnt match the one I had, filly has been through 5 people since she left Germany and dont know where the original is. She has been DNA'd yet they still wont give me a duplicate as the passport is 'only lost'.
Defra? They dont give a sh#t, told me to transport and transfer to the new owners without a second thought.

ok, i AM gonna let rip now, because lets face it, im only posting on here because its nice to talk to people while im on my own at work and get some different views/stories/experiences..... get off your flippin' high horse!!!! if i wanted to 'have a little think', i would go and put myself in a corner, like my mum used to when i was 4....

i have not once complained, i dont think, about people feeling i am wrong/right...i said 'keep your hair on' but that was only because i hadnt been quite clear enough and had led people to believe something that was not quite right! i am perfectly aware that posting here opens me up to others' views, but i am open to discussing these views and even agreeing to disagree. and come on, its not THAT inflammatory...or are you saying that everyone is perfect except me?

*slinks off to the corner to 'think' about 'consequences'*

[/ QUOTE ]

No, I agree nobody's perfect. You just seem to be revelling in the fact that you have failed to provide certain basic care for your horse. You think it's a funny and lighthearted post. I just don't understand why you would think it funny or amusing that you have failed to provide these basic services for your horse. Surely you didn't think you would not get negative comments from other posters. So now I will wander off and get back on my passported, teeth and back checked regularly wormed and worm counted high horse.

* I use the same bridle and bit for both my horses (it does fit both!)
* I was two weeks late worming this time
* I use the same western saddle on both horses, and pad it out more for the narrower one. Both have their own english though
* My turnout rugs havent been washed since last winter
