I feel very unconfident when riding new boy. Although Ive not done much riding due to some issues that came up. I cant really hack out at this yard because its on a very busy road and i dont like hacking on my own down there. Any tips for my confidence? Im fine on the ground with him. Ive been told to breathe deeply when I feel nervous.

Yep I've been there so hope I can help a little, this is what I found helped me....

Regular lessons with a good instructor, mines brill and makes it fun for both of us.

Rescue remedy - I don't use it now but did find it helped.

Talking to horse or singing as not only does it calm both of you but it makes you breathe.

Deep breathing, practice as much as you can when off the horse also.

Don't put yourself under pressure, even if you just ride for 5-10 mins per day it will make a difference.

Time!!! I think it takes upto a year to bond/get to know each other and that's you - horse and horse -you. I know feel I know how B will react to most situations and when he's worried and needs sensitivity and when he's taking the P!!!

Good luck xx

Ditto the above - just do 5 to 10 mins each time and when things start to go right you'll get your confidence back bit by bit. I always found that if I had somebody walking with me it really helped give me and the horse confidence.

Totally agree with super trooper lots of lessons, I found singing helps making up songs helps with breathing & also stops you thinking about what can go wrong. Also try to ride as often as you can coz leaving days in between gives you time to think about losing confidence again. You will get there I was physically shaking getting on my girl at the start. I think she thought she was being ridden by some sort of human massage pad :D now 8 months on we are getting there still have wobbles but enjoying it most of the time. :)
