I seem to lose all my confidence jumping, i can jump small jumps without batting an eyelid but if it moves one inch higher than am comfortable with ill canter up to it and turn my horse away as i think somethings going to happen.

, I had a jumping lesson about 3 weeks ago, and my instructor said that I have great potential jumping, as I have a good posture, but I just need to get more confidence in my self. Obv, easier sed than done. I would love to get into sj but my confidence is stopping me get anywhere

When I haven't jumped for a while, I like to do grid work on a schoolmaster. 3 or 4 jumps in a row, the next higher than the first with the last being biggest. Then the last gets bigger gradually and I'll do it. Then take away the first 2 or 3 and replace them with poles and then go over the last as a single jump. Et voila, confidence is restored.

i had this problem, i just went back to jumping tiny and just didnt worry about height more about my horses tecnique etc..and kept jumping small until i got bored and felt that i wanted to jump higher...just build up really slowly, and grid work helps alot..good luck x

try having a gridwork lesson on a horse tht know's his stuff, and jumps anything, OR have a lunge lesson, and be lunged over the jumps? keeping ur eyes closed and leg on and also hving ur arms to balence you out.
I did this after a bad jumping fall, got me straight back into my SJing again

I have exactly the same problem when I change horses and when I had a break from riding. The best thing for me was just doing it over and over again with a good instructor, gradually getting higher. Also with my new horse who is really green I have watched a more confident friend jumping him so I know he can do it I just need to get on with my part !!

Good luck

I've struggled with that exact same problem this summer. My instructor told me I just had to put jumps down low when I practiced without him and do single ones so things wouldn't go wrong and while I didn't believe it would work, by going out once a week inbetween my fortnightly lessons we managed it. I was a bag of nerves but if I could hold my nerve my horse would commit totally. So then when I had my fortnightly jumping lessons we would refine the approach and ride away, use stride/canter poles, bring in fillers, etc, and once I'd gone over small fences like that confidently, instructor would slowly inch the jumps up and then we ended up by doing several at 2'3" with a bit of a spread and related distances, and little courses, which to many on here won't sound much but was major progress for us on from the Two Foot Club! I don't know where my nerve went this summer but I'm SO glad it came back, I hope yours does too.

Until last Sunday I hadn't jumped for nearly 10 years!!! I threw myself in the deep end and went out on Bloodhound Exercise, I was told I didn't have to jump if I didn't want to. But when I got there I found out there would be a bit of jumping for everyone. At this point I was extremely nervous and my boy Beep was getting a bit excited. My boy is only 7yrs old but has a couple of seasons under his belt already, I just sat tight and let my boy do what he's good at. By the time we had got the first couple out of the way I had the confidence boost I needed and we ended up jumping everything.

So I agree with the above. Jump on a horse (excuse the pun) that knows his/her job and start easy, work your way up until you feel comfprtable going further. I am glad I had a horse that knew his job and looked after me! Am going again this weekend and now I can't wait!
