Iv'e Got A Friend Who Has An 8yo Irish Draft X Throughbread. She Has Had Him Coming Up 3 Years But Has Lost Her Confidence. She Hasnt Cantered In Years Because She Is So Scared & She Cant Bring Herself To Jump On Him, Or Any Other Horse. She's Currently Working With Him & Has Her Own Instructor, But Still Cant Manage It!
Any Help Or Advise Anyone Can Give Me?x <font color="pink"> </font>
 
Just tell her to bite the bullet. My mum used to be really scared, but I pushed her to just do it and now she enjoys riding. It sounds harsh, but that's really the only way to overcome your fear.
 
i lost my confidence after a fall a few years ago and still battle with it now, i have found the book perfect confidence by kelly marks really helpful, and find that with my instructer works me within a comfort zone but then he would push me to outside my comfort zone. to begin with i would only ride on the lunge, then when i had to canter again i would only canter a half 20 metre circle. and worked my way up.
 
when i lost my confidence i had lessons on a school master and my problem horse afterwards it really helped im fine now will ride anything hope that might help your friend good luck
 
Welcome, I wasn't feeling to confident a while ago either but the more i rode the better i felt, she needs to try a canter if only for a few strides on a horse which will definately not take off and just build on it from there. I know its not everyones cup of tea but theres some self-hypnosis downloads and CDs available specially for horseriders lacking confidence, just google Sharon Sidwell, the one i listened to was Hacking With Confidence.
 
I agree using a school master to help would be good, and to get someone else to canter her horse to show her that its well behaved (asuming it is) but if its erally bad, try hypnotherapy.
I had terrible competition nerves after my old mare trampled on any confidence I have, and I have since had hypnotherapy for nerves and now I have not stopped winning on my new, schoolmaster horse, so it worked for me and it's worth a try, especially if she feels its all in her mind. x
