Confirmation of possible new horse - comments??

I would really appreciate your thoughts on this one... he is a 15.3hh l/w cob and is 5 years old - mainly for hunting (if there is any!)/ SJ and low level eventing both unaff and aff.

There is more to this story - but would appreciate initial thoughts before I elaborate (sorry not meant to sound cryptic!)

very short coupled, and not sure if its just the way hes standing in the pic but looks quite ewe necked.. pretty faced tho. sorry if that sounded harsh!
 
not yet - but has had physio out - who I have spoken to at length... second vetting is next week BUT someone I knew showed the pic of him to their friend (before I had him vetted) and she mentioned to me today that this person thought he would fail the vet - based on his confirmation...

ETS - sorry that para above is very confusing!

and I have had a niggling feeling about something wrong about his confirmation... just can't work out what..

not harsh - very fair...

should add he is very unfit and needs loads more muscle... (not an excuse - just true!)
 
he has a very short back, a saddle will be almost on his bum!! IN the vid the rider looks as though she is stting halfway up his neck
 
I have never commented on one of these threads before because I have no qualifications on judging conformation but when I look at this horse I wonder where you would put the saddle? He looks as if he has been squashed from back to front. I don't mean to be rude but I have never seen such a a short coupled horse and I speak as the owner of one such horse myself.
 
Looks quite weak behind to me for a jumper? - back end doesn't seem to match the rest? Sorry, hate to say negative things! Doesn't have much muscle in right places at moment either, with that neck.

Presumably he jumps though??? Doesn't matter too much what he looks like if he can do his job!
 
hi. he looks a bit like one i had in that had been driven - hence the neck is so developed underneath ... my opinion (as a show jumper) is handsom is as handsom job - if he's sound and will do the job you want then fine. from a critics point of view - his thick set neck with make it harder from him to make a shape on the flat esp. without making a little noise i would suspect??? and he is short in the back - but again - not a problem if hes goign to be a jumper fun horse....

has absolutely no back end... I totally agree - def looks out of sync with front. Maybe I made allowances cos I liked him when I rode him, but I assumed it was cos he was still growing and was so unfit - so needed more muscle...

don;t think the pic does him any favours as he is standing v upright in front which shortens his neck off, watching the vid yes he is short in the back but i think with some good schooling to help him lengthen his outline he could look a changed horse, he has nice paces and although needs to go forward more could be a nice type. so long as you are prepared to put in the flatwork i think he would be ok for low level stuff. perhaps try lunging him with sidereins or a pessoa and then see what outline he can make, that will give more of an idea of how he could be in time.

but - it shows him on different ground - the concrete is sloped downhill - so his back end is even further down than it should be in those pics.

either way - am seriously reconsidering... really appreciate all your comments.

He looks like a nice enough type and if he is capeable of doing the activities you ask of him then don't let his conformation deter you too much - I've seen far, far worse!

But (and being very critical here so don't take offence please) I'd say the following: He is clearly very short coupled and has quite a short bum (if you drew verticle lines through the hip and about 2 in behind elbow (mid wither) you'd expect 3 equal sections. That said I prefer them short in the back and would go for a short backed horse over long everytime!
He also looks a little over at the knee and quite upright through his shoulder. His hoof pastern axis doesn't look quite straight but then he looks like his feet need a good trim and its something that would improve hugely with some good farriery. He doesn't look downhill at all so should be able to work quite well from behind, especially with some more muscle which seems to be lacking.
His tail looks a wee bit low set though this wouldn't bother me much and his neck does look quite upside down though this does look more muscular than skeletal and should improve hugely with correct schooling and work. He does look to have slightly high withers for a cob but again this wouldn't worry me too much and I quite like his head - he has lovely big ears, a kind eye and imo looks very genuine and noble.

I admit he's not a horse I'd throw a lot of money at but he's not one I'd discount either. I think with some good farriery, correct schooling and lots of TLC he'll make a really sweet alrounder

ten times better in the ridden picture. I wouldn't take much notice of what some person has said from one picture. Just comparing the two different pics shows how different a horse can look from one pic to the next. See what your vet says and if he can do the job you want him to do and you are prepared to put the flatwork in then go for it. I've seen far worse conformation than his...

Really? I hadn't noticed that... Could you explain why - just so I can learn?

Also - do you think his front feet look a bit strange compared to the back ones? (Something I have been thinking about)

Also - more background - he has been vetted once and failed on the near hind flexion. Physio has been to him and done some work - second vetting next week.
 
I agree, I think he looks a million times better with a saddle on. He's never going to win any showing classes but that's not what you want him for.
To be honest what would make my mind up on whether I'd buy him is price, and whether you feel comfortable on him when he jumps. That's what you want to do with him, so that's the test.
I think in the video he moves in a lovely natural rhythm and has quite nice paces - I agree if you put the work in he will look completely different in 6 months.
But he does need to be able to jump if that's what you want him for - esp if you want to do any more than have fun unaffiliated. Have you jumped him? If you're not sure, walk away and wait for something else.
