Right some people are telling me a Rav4 is the best small economical 4x4 I could get, some others are saying suzuki jimny or vitara, now someone else has added a SWB shogun equippe??????
How am I meant to decide now!!
Basically it needs to be 3 door and not 5, capable of off road/dirt tracks etc, but not to be used for towing, and good in ice/snowy conditions and also not too gas hungry as i motorway commute to work...

Any suggestions you lovely lot?

Tea and biccies or something stronger for the winning answer!!

:D

I Have a mitsubishi outlander. its the same size as OH's subaru estate and on long motorway runs i have had 50.7 miles to the gallon :)

You're looking for a SWB 4x4, if it's not a rude question how much is your budget?

You've said that you aren't particularly looking to tow, but do you want that capability?

Does it need to be particularly smart for work, are you likely to take clients out in it or visit clients?

A couple of vehicles spring to mind:

If its a chunky traditional type 4x4 then SWB Shogun about 30mpg as long as you steer clear of the V6 engine

Have you considered a saloon type that has good off road capability like a Subaru Forester? All the comforts of a saloon but great off road and does 20-30 mpg depending upon model

I have indeed after my lovely OH suggested it as well, i hadn't even thought about it, going to test drive some tomorrow (along with a couple of nice shoguns, a rav4, and a disco, although trying to stay away from these running costs wise, its just this ones such a nice colour, OH maintains its the car being in exc cond!!)
Hoping to find something this weekend.
Good point about clients, will be going out to customers in it, so needs to be relatively smart.
Seems the forester ticks a lot of boxes, i'm quite surprised at how much car u can get for your money too!!
Wish me luck :)

Check maintenance costs!! My Shogun costs me a fortune in parts! Recon engine £2k, clutch .. about the same! Fuel pump - new £4k. Need I say more? Having said that - I love my car!!!

I can recomend the Jimny, currenly on the third! I also motorway to work and find it works out well. Also live on a track and the car copes well with that. They are pretty good in snow and ice as well. Living high in the pennines it is essential that the car copes with bad weather :)

We have the new forester & its a brilliant car, cant tell you mpg off the top off my head, but we were very surprised when towing the horse! Being the newer model it looks like a 4x4, has 4wheel drive & is good for towing (not the best but good enough) I believe it has also won tow car of the year or something similar. The older versions look more estate like & dont appear as powerful. Kept us going in the snow this winter so cant really fault it for weather driving & we also fetch all of our hay in from the fields with it! & we have some seriously bumpy fields!! (ridge & furrow drainage)

I had a Honda CRV which was fab and would deffo get another. Is that too big? Otherwise I'd stick with a RAV4 and they have been recommended by What Car?!!?
I'd suggest going to one of those large car supermarkets and taking loads of different ones for test drives. You don't have to buy the ones there but might give you an idea of what you like to drive. You could always go and look for something you like elsewhere?!!?

I would def recommend the RAV4, a friend has one and is is a lovely small car but high up, good in the mud and snow and economical as well. Toyota are great build quality.

I have a disco, very thirsty and I think you have to love them to have one, (says she sitting in a puddle of water from leaking sunroof... again). Wouldn't touch a Shogun, very thirsty diesel and exp parts.

Good luck in your search, ;)

Thanks for all the info guys, i'm now the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin :)
Got the right car for the right price, and yes the forester i had my eye on was sold before i even phoned up, that too was a good price seemingly!
Have looked at all the reviews carefully (had OH and Dad check it over for all the usual that i have no idea about!!) and was impressed by the ave mpg on the clock, its been very well looked after and only ever been a 2nd car, never towed, tbh doesn't look like its ever been off road!!
Very pleased!
