conflicting opinions on whether my pony is a coloured or not, advice please?

As I understand it, your horse is a bay sabino. My four black pure Shires, each with 4 whites and blazes, are considered black sabinos.
 
What colour would you say this boy is? Winter coat:

White flecks, jagged edges to leg markings and white on lower lip all point to sabino.

Is he a black that fades in the sun or a dark bay? I don't know. You could test for agouti if you want to know.
 
I wouldn't say he's a true black, he's passported as dark bay (a lot of umming and ahhing at the time), he fades out to a lighter bay in the sun though, but could be described as almost black in the depths of winter..

AA is in a pluming rage at the moment. The show horse who I have nursed through 52 weeks of box rest has failed to rehab so has been turned out in a tiny paddock 10 days ago. First he had a rumbly colic, then a chill with a massive temperature, now he has 2 septic feet, both of which burst today. Anyone tried poulticing a horse who only has 2 sound legs to stand on !

The glint in his eye this evening tells me he is feeling a lot better, as I purposefully stride towards him with a bag of carrots and a tin of tetramycin. He happily gives me the front to spray and as I ask for the hind, my OH says ' he is trembling with fear dear'.....he may well have been, he has had tremendous pain, but it didn't stop him planting a swift kick on my knee ! It's been decades since I have been kicked, forgot how much it hurts. The peas that were going with the fishfingers are now on my knee. Give me strength, I need valium and a lottery win to cope with my horses at the moment.

Back to the subject, Ted is actually black, but is so dirty and rank he doesn't look very black. He still has his foal tail and it does look like it's growing out black. He needs a bath but he can wait, he might kick my good knee !
 
thanks to whoever it was who suggested sending a pic to the CHAPS society, as you say they would know either way. i dont' personally care as he is my little dude but would be good to get a definate answer so when people say he's a skewbald i can say actually yes or no he is/nt and not have the doubts!

I would say not coloured, the patch doesn't look large enough (6" sq) and should be clearly visible directly from the side.
 
He's not a skewbald he is a sabino :)

My chestnut sabino mare is simply reg'd as chestnut with the welsh pony&cob society and she really looks not much like a chestnut at all esp in winter so I'm going to change the colour for my own happiness haha

Shadyoak your horse looks so similar to mine lol! mine has more white under his stomach and up his legs and on his face, he also has roan flecks.

Hi riding high, i am sure your horses colouring is called 'blagdon' as that is what mine is and my old girl was and both have white legs, belly splodges, face and roan flecks , if you research it you will find it describes him perfectly :) wish i knew how to add a link lol!

I was told my a county judge that a coloured had to have 60% one colour and 40% another to be classed as a true coloured in chaps, although mine had all white belly and legs and a small splodge on her neck plus a white face she was not classed as a coloured as percentage wasnt correct :).

Also her colouring bled from black to white and wasnt a defined line this also goes against them. She also had roan flecks therefore making her a 'Blagdon'.

both mine have clydesdale in them which is where the colouring descends from :)
 
^^ my chestnut ISH had a belly splodge too, and I wouldn't have called him coloured or anything else either :) interesting how it actually works though! :)
 
I know a ' black 'with a big White splurge on her tummy, and she is registered with chaps!!!

Whoever the same thing crossed my mind with a friends Clydesdale x he has a White splodge and we also just assumed it was the Clydesdale in him.

Shadey Oak I had a Hannovarian x Tb a similar colour in the summer and he was a Black Base chestnut. Whatever that is. If he was rugged in the summer he did not bleach as much. Not much sun this summer to bleach horses.
OP from memory I think if it more than 6cm it can be classed as a coloured but appreciate the splashing of a clydie. I am sure at local level he could do a coloured class. She is a gorgeous stamp of a horse indeed...coloured or otherwise.
Ted is also a handsome big lad. I love the heavy crosses.
