I know what I think (and also what I know) so do your worst :)

He was 15 when I took the photo

Actually quite a nice horse - little upright in the shoulder and I would prefer a little bit more condition on him - but yea - nice.

He's grey, you can't go wrong with a grey.
I can see how he got his nickname, he has some belly on him, although perversely he looks like he would do with a good meal :)
If I recall correctly, I think he had been turned away for a while before the pic was taken and yes, could've used a bit more condition, but he's always got that tummy :)

PF, with you being the fount of all horsey knowledge I am too scared to offer an opinion. You are practically god now. It's not for us mere mortals to critique your horse!

There isn't anything that would particularly put me off buying him... The hind pasterns are a bit long, but if he is sound at 15, it doesn't actually matter.
Is he a bit croup high?

He's not mine, he belongs to my uncle. We (and everyone else) know he (the horse!) is not conventionally 'attractive' but it doesn't stop him jumping :) He's still got a big tummy though;

ETS: I know I've said Faisan (the horse) is jumping 1.30m... I'm aware the round in the vid isn't that high.

I don't find him unattractive but then brown horse is hardly a picture and I chose him. And if I read that right and they're 1.20 no, it certainly doesn't stop him jumping. He made that look very easy indeed.

There is not much I like about this horse at all, a tad staight in the shoulder?

There's not much you like, or don't like?
The reason I made this post is just that Faisan is not a very handsome chap in the conventional sense; he has a big head, short neck, upright shoulder, barrel tummy, not much of a backside on him and high hocks... BUT he still goes out and wins over 1.20m/1.30m :)

Sorry, there is no need to be touchy. You asked for an opinion on a photo, I gave mine, not knowing that he was the be all and end all of show jumpers. He is very forgiving and genuine as well.

As someone who knows bugger all about conformation, I like the look of him! I don't know why, there's just something that pleases me about his overall shape, though I think he could look better with a bit more condition and topline.

Lovely round of jumping. :) It wasn't until I came on HHO that I ever heard anyone mention conformation, it has never mattered to me but then again, I'm pretty much just a happy hacker.

Well frankly he's probably lucky he hasn't. He seems perfectly happy to me.

This is my ugly bruiser. I think Faisan is positively handsome in comparison.

And this one doesn't do anything well because it has a sour attitude. No one will buy him either I expect. Fortunately for him I am getting soft in my old age and will just put up with him because when he moves it is lovely to watch. As long as no one is sitting on him of course because that means work and going like some kind of odd giraffe.

I reckon his conformation really isnt the best but he may look more proportional with more weight on? however, conformation isnt the be all and end all. To me temperement is more important

I wasn't being touchy in the least. I was asking for clarification; you said "there is not much I like about this horse at all" but only mentioned the upright shoulder. Hence I wondered if it might've been a typo.
You seem to have missed the point of this thread completely which is that odd-looking horses can STILL do very well competitively, and as a matter of fact he's not particularly forgiving and is known to be a bit quirky.

My uncle adores him, but they do squabble a bit as Faisan has quite a.. ahem.. sense of humour about him. They do very well together.

Good, I am pleased for you. Well done.

touch croup high,
slightly upright shoulder,
poor conformation , generaly abit upright behind
looks 'stood over' at the front
large head
no top
muscles suggest a strong horse to my eye , or something not right in his way of going as his neck is set on ok but the muscles are in the wrong place. and if he always has a big gut like that then perhaps odd dygestion as the few horses i have met with that shape stomach are generaly uncomfortable there.

nice short back, ok front limbs, honest expresion.

I didnt watch the vid as i wanted to just critique him as you asked. My old tb looks similar, same age , though his neck is not set on as well, and he is still a tremendous jumper warts and all!

First thing I notice is that he is camped under in front which would indicate discomfort in hs heels. This could be why he looks straight in the shoulder. Then the dips in front and behind his withers and the tension in his neck - might indicate that his saddle needs checked. The jumper's bump and elevated tail carriage = sciatic problems. The ribbiness + bloated belly suggests stomach ulcers. Perhaps he would benefit from a visit from a good physio - I think the problems are less to do with conformation than comfort.

I'm afraid that was the first thing I thought when I saw him - it may just be an unfortunate photo but he looks very uncomfortable: tense and hunched.

What a lovely name!

I looked at the photo and picked up some of the faults mentioned then watched the vid and they all seemed to be thrown into sharp relief! The short neck, upright shoulder, big head etc but then as you watch him calmly and easily jump round the course it no longer matters! :)

'Hansome is as hansome does' most definetly applies! ;)

There's a workmanlike quality about him which I quite like! Handsome is as handsome does.....if he does his job who cares what he looks like??!!

As for you Pasty, not all horses are perfect you know - why don't you pop off back to you little showing bubble - you always manage to put your point of view over in a rude and dismissive way......
