I know what I think (and also what I know) so do your worst
He was 15 when I took the photo

His nicknames are 'the manatee' and 'fat boy'Actually quite a nice horse - little upright in the shoulder and I would prefer a little bit more condition on him - but yea - nice.
Cant talk as I dont like being wrongp) but was he stood on level ground at the time - would ask how old he is but I saw you said 15

If I recall correctly, I think he had been turned away for a while before the pic was taken and yes, could've used a bit more condition, but he's always got that tummyHe's grey, you can't go wrong with a grey.
I can see how he got his nickname, he has some belly on him, although perversely he looks like he would do with a good meal![]()

PF, with you being the fount of all horsey knowledge I am too scared to offer an opinion. You are practically god now. It's not for us mere mortals to critique your horse!
There isn't anything that would particularly put me off buying him... The hind pasterns are a bit long, but if he is sound at 15, it doesn't actually matter.
Is he a bit croup high?
There is not much I like about this horse at all, a tad staight in the shoulder?
Poor Faisan has never sold because of his looks... even though he wins and wins and wins... some people, eh?I don't find him unattractive but then brown horse is hardly a picture and I chose him. And if I read that right and they're 1.20 no, it certainly doesn't stop him jumping. He made that look very easy indeed.
There's not much you like, or don't like?
The reason I made this post is just that Faisan is not a very handsome chap in the conventional sense; he has a big head, short neck, upright shoulder, barrel tummy, not much of a backside on him and high hocks... BUT he still goes out and wins over 1.20m/1.30m![]()
Sorry, there is no need to be touchy. You asked for an opinion on a photo, I gave mine, not knowing that he was the be all and end all of show jumpers. He is very forgiving and genuine as well.
As someone who knows bugger all about conformation, I like the look of him! I don't know why, there's just something that pleases me about his overall shape, though I think he could look better with a bit more condition and topline.
Lovely round of jumping. It wasn't until I came on HHO that I ever heard anyone mention conformation, it has never mattered to me but then again, I'm pretty much just a happy hacker.
I wasn't being touchy in the least. I was asking for clarification; you said "there is not much I like about this horse at all" but only mentioned the upright shoulder. Hence I wondered if it might've been a typo.
You seem to have missed the point of this thread completely which is that odd-looking horses can STILL do very well competitively, and as a matter of fact he's not particularly forgiving and is known to be a bit quirky.
Good, I am pleased for you. Well done.
First thing I notice is that he is camped under in front which would indicate discomfort in hs heels. This could be why he looks straight in the shoulder. Then the dips in front and behind his withers and the tension in his neck - might indicate that his saddle needs checked. The jumper's bump and elevated tail carriage = sciatic problems. The ribbiness + bloated belly suggests stomach ulcers. Perhaps he would benefit from a visit from a good physio - I think the problems are less to do with conformation than comfort.
