I made a post in the picture gallery of my horse and although it got some lovely comments, non were on conformation which is what I was really interested to see what others thought about so if anyone has a spare min or two please click the link below to my post with pics and comment on conformation

I generally know what I think, but am interested in other opinions!!

Thanks!

Okay needs muscle/topline but you know that.

He's stood with his bum shoved in a corner so has his hindlegs sort of tucked under him and that doesn't help but he looks to have a slightly over straight hind leg. He's nice, I am only being really picky because you asked. A showing bod would tell you to chop a few inches off his tail as a long one doesn't flatter any horse

Truthful - there would be no point to the post if I didn't want the truth

I can handle it

When he came, he had a tail about the length it is now and I cut it the day he arrived because I said it was too long and made him look like nobody owned him and now I have let it get that long again

I think I will trim it over the weekend!!

I think he has pretty good conformation. As you say you need to build up the topline and that will improve him. In all the pics he is standing with his front legs under him and not standing up nicely so it makes his shoulder maybe look a little upright?

He looks fab tho.

Ok, I'll have a go...but the photos don't do him any favours

Nice head, although long between projecting cheek bone, and corner of mouth...he also has a short mouth which may/may not fit a double...
He has a slightly weak neck (although correct muscle) which goes into a high wither, thus making saddle fitting more difficult.
His shoulder angle also looks too upright (this may be the photo) meaning that he will have a shorter stride.
He does have good depth thru girth (for heart and lung room) so should cope well with work without tiring easily.
He is long in the loins, but short in the croup giving a slightly weaker back end, with perhaps a straighter than ideal back leg. His gaskin appears well muscled suggesting he does engage behind despite this. I can't see the rest of his hinds

.
His front legs are proportionally quite good; long forearms and short cannon, although they are set under him a little too far. He appears to have long, slightly upright pasters, but good feet.
Overall, he has correct muscle, which suggests he is ridden/worked by a knowledgeable rider. I would guess (probably completely wrongly

) that he has a tendency to be a bit lazy behind, and to prefer to carry a bit of weight on his forehand, although I think his rein contact will not be heavy.
He is a nice type....and overall, despite some flaws, I like him.

Thankyou Shilasdair

I knew that the pics didn't do him any favours but wanted to get some opinions anyway! He was tied up and I moved him round so I could stand back to take them but it meant he was stood how I had moved him and with his bum scrunched in the corner, rather than stood naturally. I will try to get some of him stood properly this weekend - I did try the night I took these but I was on my own and when I tried to take them without him tied up, everytime I stepped back to get the pic, he walked towards me

You are right about fitting a saddle - it was a pain for sure
grin.gif

And you are sort of right about the riding bit - well, definately the knowledgeable rider
tongue.gif
- haha I wish!! But seriously, when he gets tired he will carry a little weight on the forehand but otherwise he is actually pretty active behind and it is easy to sit him back, he is never heavy in the hand - thankful as it is one of my pet hates as a rider!
I will try and get some better pics and video clips of him over the weekend!
He definately has some faults but I am glad you like him, overall, I do too!

I hope I didn't offend you...but you said you wanted it done honestly rather than just the usual 'what a pretty horse' post?
He looks like he's a nice person....if you take more pics for conformation, do a front and back view too, please

Seriously though, I am genuinely interested and grateful you took the time to post your opinion!
