Just as the title says really,
I had my pony worm counted in December and it came back very low. In the last week he seemed more anxious and started tail rubbing so I dosed him with equest orally last night. Within 10mins he was rubbing again so I had a look and there was like a burst worm like thing coming out of his butt :( ugh, anyway I left him for the wormer to do its stuff...

This morning I've had a look through some of last nights poop and there are lots of tiny worms about 8mm long, some are dead but some are still able to move a little! There is a little white gunk around his tail.

Soo...

Has the wormer even worked if some of the worms are still alive?
Could it be pinworm given the disgusting dead worm emergence last night?
If it is pinworm do I need to be wormed too?! What about my OH?
Is it true that he should also be bathed and have his sheath cleaned in order to get rid of them?? (it's winter, not really bath time!)

Should I just get the vet and stop bothering you nice folk on this forum, lol?

Thank you for reading :)

I wouldn't worry too much that some of the worms are still alive. I found some similar little critters last summer in my horse's dung on the surface after worming so I contacted the worm count people and they said not to worry, they would be non-viable. In my case, they seemed to think they were immature redworm, but they were definitely white and tiny, but anyway, they cleared up soon enough, and remember, Equest stays working in the system for 12 weeks and is the best treatment for encysted redworm, so you've done the right thing.

It could be pinworm however. Why don't you contact the people who did your worm count in December, they are usually very helpful. You may need to do a follow up count and/or dose with another product to be sure everything is killed off.

Thank you for the reply.
I contacted the nice worm count folk and they confirm that he sample won't pick up pinworm. However they are happy if I take a Sellotape sample next time and enclose it with the test, they will check it too at no extra cost :)
Good to know

hi sounds like the pin worm is going rond i bought a colt 8 weeks ago i wormed him and a lot of worms came out 2 weeks later more live worms in his poo i wormed him again. 2 weeks later more worms so i got intouch with my vet. because he had already had to wormers she suggested i put half a tube up his butt so it doesnt go through his gut. 10 mins later a lot of pin worms coming out. vet said trouble with pin worms is they live in the bum and giving wormers via mouth doesnt always reach the back end of the horse any way im still treating for pin worms got to pick up a 5 day treatment monday from vets

Ok the burst worm description sounds like a tape worm to me.

Id give a double dose of strongidP when it is safe to do so - its a different drug to the equest, the double does covers tapes as well as the other worms.

Are you poo picking daily to stop him getting re infested?

Be aware of abscesses in his feet from all the wormers.

If it is pinworm? Equest does not cover it! I had a problem with pin worm with one of mine. They are all out 24/7 on the same grazing but only one had pinworm. ( pinworm makes their backsides extremely itchy!)
I was on an Equest worming program, after a lot of head scratching and research I found out that equest does not cover pin worm. I used strongid P @ 1 1/2 x recomended does and have had no problem since last summer.... touch wood :)
