Oh Dear Lord that had me in hysterics!!

Chopt heir balls of, they would shut them up!

Did you actually know they only use geldings or stallions for rodeos? They use a "special" strap that goes round their penis and they tighten it really tight and the horses go mental. Thats why they buck so much.

Does anybody know if theres a rodeo at the calgary stempede?? If there is i'm going to gate crash it when I go to canada next year!

Look on the bright side, ladies and gents. For every American testosterone fuelled academically challenged cowboy, there are many other caring loving horse owners who ensure their animals have a happy life and a good death.

I'm sorry, but that IS NOT true. The bucking strap goes around the horse's flank and is not tight. It works in the same way as a saddle that has slipped back.

Yes, there is some less than perfect animal care are rodeos, but NOT ALL OF THEM ARE BAD. Just like any sport that uses animals, there is good and bad. All the horses are worth money to the cowboys. It's worth it to them to keep the horses in good condition.

The calf roping was used at branding time to restrain the babies while they were branded. When it's done right, it dosen't harm them at all.

So you're saying that all cowboys are stupid and don't care for their animals? I'm sure that's not true. Stop being so narrow minded.

OMG that was just horrific.
I think that castrating these animlas that call themselves human is just too kind.
They need to be hung drawn and quartered then tied up and dragged for a far few miles that still wouldn't be enough to teach them a lesson though!!

I don't know how, bit I managed to watch till the end, and them tortured myself further by watching some of the other videos on there. I'm now sitting here in floods of tears and I'm ashamed to be human.
I just want to go and hug Axel

I can't access YouTube at work but from your comments I take it this video is of certain rodeo events particularly calf roping and bronc riding. Since it is obvious that none of you have actually seen a rodeo and know nothing about the various events, let me enlighten you.
As far as this being a testoterone thing, let me assure you that many women compete in team roping and breakaway calf roping. Its not just for cowboys. Steer and calf roping have been around for 100's of years. In the days of the open range it was the only way to capture cattle to doctor, brand, castrate, etc. Even today it is often the most practical way to catch sick calves to doctor them. Understand, our farms and ranches are much larger than yours, one pasture may be several hundred acres. Over time roping contests developed to test the horse's and cowboy/girl's skill. It takes a highly trained horse/roper team to be successful at roping contests. Injuries to the calves and steers are rare, they do happen but are not common. Kind of like injuries to horses while fox hunting or at X country events.
wink.gif
When the calves become too big to rope, they are sent to feed lots and eventually wind up a steaks and burgers. The steers are a special breed of Mexican cattle called Corrientes and generally have fairly long lives.
The rough stock, broncs and bulls, are bred specifically for bucking. A good bucking horse or bull can be worth tens of thousands of $$$ and are cared for accordingly. There is a bucking stock registry for both cattle and horses, complete with pedigrees. To set the record straight, they don't just use stallions or geldings as bucking horses, there have been many famous bucking mares. They don't use a strap around the penis or testicles of either the horses or the bulls. There is a strap around the flank of the animal that is supposed to make them buck higher. If the strap is too tight it would restrict their movement and prevent them from bucking properly. The truth is most of these animals would buck even without the strap. Rough stock, both horses and bulls work a few seconds a weekend and recieve the best of care the rest of the time. They aren't terrified of people, they aren't bucking because they are scared, they are bucking because that is what they are bred to do. Their rate of injury is less than that of racing, show jumping and certainly X country.
For the person that said America is a cruel and evil country, I believe there is a whole forum on H & H devoted to bemoaning the fact that shredding a fox with hounds or terriers has been outlawed in Britian!

That's what I said too.

Thats fine, and have no probs with what you have said.

However, watch the video. Slamming a horses body against a metal cage by wrapping a rope around its neck and having a full grown man yanking it through the bars to slam the horses head and neck into a solid structure, pulling and biting horses ears, and continuously beating it around the head, and also having a horse buck and buck until it falls on the floor and is unable to get up is IMO simply unacceptable and unnecessary.
mad.gif

Oh and to compare the activities in the vid to fox hunting is impossible, the video shows animals in a helpless caged environment. Hunting is not.

I have sat here for a few minutes with my mouse hovering over that link debating whether or not to open it. I have decided against it as I know how angry it will make me and I will probably have nightmares
crazy.gif

Interesting though we have another newly registered American guest jump on here to try and justify it..... what is it with these people? (and by that I mean people who try and pretend that this stuff is tradition and not American people in general)
confused.gif

Okay, I've watched the link and thought about this.

I'm in two minds, I found the first bit horrifying (where they were slamming the horse's head against the bars.. I can only assume this was to anger the horse into bucking and bronking more?) and the rest sick.

But i agree that some of this is no different to Hunting. if they were doing the same on this video to a fox would people react the same? Would everyone be saying it was barbaric? The anti's certainally, but how many of you who hunt regularly would say so?

Sorry, i feel it's hypocritical for hunting people to say this is cruel, after all, this is a tradition in america, it provides income, jobs and has been around for a long long time. Just like hunting.

i've just said something re comparing hunting to this above.

It is VERY possible to compare the two. The tradition, the jobs, the income and the fact it's a way of life,( for farming).

I'm pro hunting but anti this... therefore I now feel a total hypocrite, because I can see the similarities. Some would say chasing an ikkle fluffy fox for miles before ripping it apart is criel...

I can't believe they think themselves a civilised country when this barbaric practice is allowed to continue.

I have never agreed with rodeo and never wanted to visit the states and yet we Brits flock in our thousands to line the pockets of these sick b******s in the name of entertainment. Just think, every time we get on a plane to the good old US of A we help support their tourist industry. I say vote with your feet people, stay at home!

First of all I've been registered for some time, I just mostly lurk and don't post very often. I find the differences in riding styles and horse management interesting. Plus many of the American forums don't allow any controversial discussions so I like the way y'all say what you think. I loved the Parelli and Amy Tryon discussions.
I watched the video. I think that since the title was something like the "Terror of Rodeo", it is safe to assume the producer had a bias against the sport and an agenda to show it in the worst possible light. It showed a lot of accidents and wrecks (many seemed to be the same piece of film shown over and over again). It never showed the calf or steer getting up and trotting off unconcerned or the bronc stop bucking at the buzzer and going back to its pen and feed trough. Like all propaganda, the video's aim was to get it's producer's point of view across. I could make a video showing nothing but clips of spectacular falls and injured and dead horses add some sad music and call it the "Horror of X Country" and make the sport seem like the worst form of horse abuse.

I think the horse in the bucking chute had sat down in the chute and they were trying to get him to stand up. I really don't think they were slamming his head into the side of the chute, the video looked like it was "doctored" to me, they showed the same clip over and over and it appeared to be speeded up to make it look like the horse's head was being slammed into the chute. The horse did shy a couple of times and may have hit his head. Horses do fall sometimes while bucking just like they fall sometimes while jumping. Horses are only bucked for 8 seconds, not until they fall from exhaustion. Wild horse racing is not an official rodeo event. It is held at a few rodeos. It is mostly harder on the cowboys involved than the horses. In the clip shown, the guys wrapped the cotton rope around the sorrel horse's legs to lay him down so he'd be easier to saddle and mount. But their strategy backfired as the pony just quit on them and wouldn't get up. The guy was biting the horse's ear to get him to hold still while they got the rope untangled. Earing a horse down is like using a twitch, they focus on the ear and will hold still. In the old days when horses were broken by bucking them out, twisting the ear and biting it were used to get them to stand still for mounting. It has the same effect as using a twitch and is no crueler than using a twitch. You can get your teeth knocked out though. I don't really condone doing this unless you're in a real bind. Earing a horse down can make them head shy.

The calf and steer roping clips were all of wrecks and accidents. These things happen but they are not that common. Again, the maker of this video had an agenda.

I'm not saying that there is never cruelty in rodeo. Like all animal sports there are some bad people. Those folks should be stopped and prosecuted if need be. But I am saying that the sport is not as bad as this video makes it out to be.

Good and bad in all, I`m amazed that so many in this thread was taken in by a very biased video which of course emphasised the worst. A few posters have suggested it is testosterone driven, perhaps a few here could think with heads rather than be driven by emotion.

Oh come on. I've seen that video, I think its horrific. But to label an entire country from a few biased video clips and some nasty people is just ridiculous.

I'm certainly not the biggest fan of America ever, and I disagree with a lot of the things I've seen done, but its certainly not representative of the whole country.

America is also not the only country that has cruel "sports" as entertainment. Fox hunting for one, and I am pro! Spain has bull fighting, which I think is horrible, and of course a lot of countries on the continent still have animal fights for money etc.

The countries that all have horrendous sport such as bull fighting etc need to wake up and stop them.
I know rodeos are just the tip of the iceberg but if people actually watched such videos and actually looked at what happens then maybe more petitions could be started.
If enough people boycotted these events MONEY would no longer be made.
Rember this is just ONE video there are MANY more out there.
I am no bunny hugger just a concerned person.........

I have never said i condone rodeo overall, I condone the content of the video, and the coverage of animals being bashed in pens, bitten by people and slammed about in an enclosed space with no way to get down is NOT comparable to hunting. The lifestyle etc is comparable, but that wasnt what i was referring to.

And they say fox hunting is cruel??? Fox hunting is nothing compared to that.

Can someone please tell me what the HELL is the calf roping all about? So they think they're hard for tripping and then dragging/strangling a very young calf. Sick, thats what they are.

You need to watch the video, babe. It isn't much of an advert for your home country.
I have no doubt that there are properly run rodeos, and I agree it is the height of stupidity for American cowboys to abuse their stock...but that's what they're doing on the video.
And I, Shilasdair said America was an evil country....I haven't seen much to prove me wrong.
Oh, and not that it's relevant, I don't hunt.

I am not the type to be influenced by cleverly edited videos. Yes I agree some of it is replayed over for effect, but I still believe horses would not naturally buck and buck and buck until they fall over, they have self preservation and do not like to come off their feet, it goes against their natural "prey" instinct. I also strongly disagree with ear twitching "roping" horses into submission and dragging near "wild" horses into a huge arenato be sat on for the first time. That is just my opinion, but I am open minded enough to realise this is how some people choose to do it. and so be it. HOWEVER treating the animals in such a rough and unforgiving way is unacceptable regardless of how the "culture" dictates them to be backed/trained etc etc.

Meandmyself,
I think you've misread my sentence - I don't know every American cowboy personally (do you
wink.gif
?) but from the sample on video, I can say I'm glad they didn't go in for medicine, or nucleur phsysics as career paths.
Stop being so wide minded and have an opinion!

Agreed! I really don't know how anyone can say that watching that made them cry or feel sick - but hey, I am hard hearted and just actually realise what goes on in the world I suppose.

And yes, I support bullfighting!
