Honestly, I don't think ALL the scenes in the video depict genuine acts of cruelty. The rough handling is certainly unmistakeable, but there are plenty more scenes that could just be accidents.
As far as I am concerned, for a quantity of that video, if not the whole video, there was significant abuse and cruelty displayed. Even if half the video was as it seemed that is more than enough for me. There were some out and out disgraceful acts. For example, thrashing the horse's head against the bars, kicking sick animals, riding over a sick horse lying on the floor, etc, I don't think anyone can argue with that. And for me, that is enough to appall and sicken me.
But why would they want to beat a "bucking horse" into submission? The whole point of broncs is that they are to appear wild - a horse which has been beaten couldn't possibly be much of a challenge to a rodeo rider?
My thought re the chute was to either wind it up, so it would "run" from the treatment when given the oppurtunity, or to try and "control" it in some way. Both unjustifiable though!
You've watched the clip so are aware of the length of time that horse was in the chute, although I have to say the clip was re-run a few times so this may not have actually been the case. It is not usual, or condusive to the popularity of the rodeo, for the horse to be in the chute for longer than a few seconds. Rodeos are quick - no rodeo organiser can have the arena empty for long otherwise this would put the crowd off coming again.....
As a earlier poster mentioned he thought the video was fixed and edited.
I live on a farm I am pretty realistic about life and what happens. There is a vast difference between cruelty and rough handling. I have watched that horse racing video and was horrified for 5 seconds till I realised what clever editing and choosing a choice moments. My horse recently reared up over backwards through being an idiot and stunned himself before getting up fine and a lot of those in that video have just had so much adrenaline pumping they just wind themselves.
Not one of those animals in my opinion was sick or sorry for themselves. None of them were lame and the ones that butted the wall was just an accident. I have seen toddler children do the same when they are so excited.
May not be a representation but I still think the video was full of cruelty. The aim seems to be to wind the animals up so much they buck/run as fast/hard as they can for max. entertainment. Not on IMO
Such a shame you view it in this light, as rodeos are not run for that reason at all. The whole point of rodeos are for skilled horsemen to compete at something which they do at home; the same as showjumping, dressage, eventing etc. These cowboys do this for a living; often they run thousands of head of cattle.....most are far more proficient horsemen/women than most people could ever possibly imagine being.
How many times have you seen adverts or heard comments saying that the horse will do such and such at home but the minute it goes to a show things are different.....
Accidents will always happen. Cruelty should be stamped out. People should look at their own practices before condemning others.....particularly if they have little or no understanding of other practices.

Meandmyself,
I think you've misread my sentence - I don't know every American cowboy personally (do you
?) but from the sample on video, I can say I'm glad they didn't go in for medicine, or nucleur phsysics as career paths.
Stop being so wide minded and have an opinion!

Nah, I don't know every cowboy, but I did date one for over 6 months. He was the most caring, charming man I've even met. He did take part in rodeo and his horses were very well cared for. He had to shoot one of his mares (she broke her leg in the pasture) and cried for her afterwards.
ETA- I do have an opinion. I just don't base my opinions on one vid... There's cruelty in all horse sports, at all levels.
the thing that creeped me out was the fact that the chestnut that possibly died or at least didnt get up looks exactly like my mare. how can people justify doing this. ill hold their head underwater and make them stay there till the last possible moment and then jump on their backs whilst 10 pple stand with machine guns poniting at them and see how they feel.
