Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advise on what bit to use. My pony is currently in a copper jointed snaffle but when we go out to rides away from home he gets really excited and i have no brakes!

I want to find a bit that I can use just for those occasions when he is likely to get over excited, just so i have some extra control.

He is only a 6 year old, so I don't want to use anything to severe.

Thanks
Hope you can help.:)

Hello and welcome :)

It is really, really hard for anyone to advise when they don't know your pony. Do you have anyone on the ground - an instructor preferably - who can give some advice? Sometimes you might need to try a few different bits to see what suits.

What does your pony do? Stick its head up, open his mouth, head toss? It's pretty normal to get overexcited out and about and it's not always a bitting issue.

He sticks his head up and tosses his head too. But once he sees the chance to go, he just grabs the bit and pulls. But it is the brakes that I require!

You may want to look at a Dutch Gag the third ring down is for brakes and the ring up from that is a snaffle. My Haffie goes well in a snaffle so we school and compete in that but I use the DG out hacking alone and in company at pleasure rides etc just so I know I will have brakes if I need them.

If he goes well in a snaffle, you could try a Cheltenham/Balding gag with double reins. Then you ride primarily on the snaffle, with te gag action for those moments you need brake. I do this XC - works great.
