This will be the first winter for me and my new horse and in the next week or so (hopefully!) he's getting a blanket clip- he's in consistent work and sweats so much!
He's a fairly sturdy type (not sure of breeding but maybe got some welsh/fjord in him) with a thick ish coat, hes 4 and never been clipped before and currently has no rug on except a lightweight when it chucks it down and he lives out 24/7.
When he's clipped I don't know what rug to put on him! Obviously he'll need one cos a blanket clip takes quite a lot off, but just wondered what your opinions are? Do i put on a medium weight? I've got a 200g one with detachable neck or do i invest in one a bit lighter maybe?

200g is not very heavy so I wouldn't put anything lighter on him. I would start off with the 200g and keep an eye on his weight. If he's out 24/7 it would be a good idea to have 2 rugs so you have a spare for when one gets really wet.

You will be surprised at how dense and thick his coat is when he's clipped, so you need to replace that thickness when you rug him.
 
I wouldnt want anything lighter on him either. And i would def have 1 with a neck as with a blanket clip you're loosing everythin from that area. I'd want 2 layer in the depth winter as well and have a couple of spares. But its really hard to say for sure as its really dependent on the horse, where you are and the weather.
 
Off the subject, but have you got a picture of him we can see? I only ask because that breeding has been suggested for my boy too, want to see if yours looks similar! :)

I would play it by ear. I did an almost blanket clip on my boy the other week and he has been very warm in just a standard neck mediumweight (weatherbeeta) and too hot most days (apart from one day this week when we had frost in the morning) in a full neck mediumweight.

Without sounding rude, your boy could do with losing a bit of weight so I'd be inclided to rug on the lighter side. He looks lovely though :)
 
I'd use the two you have, & as already said some hws with necks for when its freezing. Just play it by ear though, they're all different. Once fully clipped, my daughters very warm pony will only wear a hw combo on days its below zero, despite the fact she eats very little hay, even when its snowing. By comparison, in the same weather my constantly munching connie x tb will be wearing a mw stable rug under a hw combo. Both mine are in at night once fully clipped so not quite the same, but sure you see what I'm saying. Currently unclipped & out 24/7, former rugless, the latter in a lw in the day, mw at night.

ahhh! I see! sorry. you're right! He has slimmed down - well done! :) Start off rugging on the thinner side though - you can always put a thicker one on if he looks or feels cold ;)
 
Rug according to the individual horse. Not all horses who are clipped need rugs, I certainly wouldnt be starting at 200 or using a full neck. See how he feels.
 
Thanks for the pics, he's lovely, doesn't look like mine though, and you've done a great job with his weight loss. Mine has just a summer sheet on all winter, no neck even though he is hogged, but he only has a low chaser clip and comes in overnight. :)
 
Thanks :) he was very round when I had him from doing no work and stuffing his face! Haha

And thanks for everyone's replies, will prob put a medium standard neck on first and see how he is :)
