Hi,

I have a 'typical' chestnut mare who is a sweetie 85% of the time but occasionally will be a complete B£%*h. She loves to jump and gets vey strong but recently, we popped a few small fences, then suddenly she started broncing and being a total headcase, but calmed down (ish) when I started to do flatwork schooling again. I've had her for about 5 months now and if anything her hissy fits are getting slightly worse. I dont think shes nasty, just excited but I dont know what I can do when she freaks out and I'm very aware of my fragility when she freaks.

Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

This could be my girl! I own a very typical alpha chestnut tb mare!

Mine does these random acts of excitement. Took me a good while to get used to them! Lessons helped immensely; and you'll learn to realise what's naughty; excited, pain & scared behaviour!

Mine loves jumping too @ often used to bounce around & can do amazing frog leaps too! I learnt that I do not tell her off at all as that made it worse. I simply ignored the behaviour she was doing & kept her forward. I love that she gets so excited about things & I hate it at the same time. She hunts amazingly well so she doesn't do it all the tine

Thanks all. I know that behaviour isn't influenced by colour but as its an old wives tale I thought I'd add it in! Everyone knows chestnut mares with 4 white socks are nuts surely!! Haha.
I've had saddle fitted, back checked, teeth done etc but I think she's just excited and needs a good blast out but sadly, after a very horrible horse prior to my mare, I've lost some confidence. But yes, a good instructor is key and I will get a lesson booked ASAP. Thanks x

Also I find wearing headphones in the school helps me loads, then she cant annoy me as much and I don't annoy her as much.

Chestnut mares rule tho!

My 'Chestnut mare' Is a very strong, opinionated showjumper. She tries on everything she can and is not in pain at all just very clever. Do you do the same things day in and day out? Say in the school do you do the same excersize or the same routine when you jump?
I found my mare was getting clever to what i was going to ask, so by schooling in a totally different routine or jumping something like poles and grids instead of a course, and then just schooling and vice versa made her much nicer to ride because she didn't know what was coming next and it keeps her interested :)

She is a very clever girl and you're right, she gets bored easily, and also she's easily distracted. I try to vary what I do with her and I'm fortunate to have fantastic facilities at my yard. I rode tonight and she was a completely different lady, completely chilled in the stable and just lovely to ride. Ill never understand what goes on in her head!!
