a few people i teach have offered to let me use their horse/pony for me to teach another rider on in exchange for livery services. do i need a riding school licence (as i do not own the ponies)?

If you are arranging horses for people to have lessons on then yes, you will need a riding school licence.
The BHS legal helpline are very good at helping with this sort of thing and will give you a definitive legal standing.

As well as a license you will also require insurance - you may have already realised this but any freelance insurance will require you to hold a license if you are providing a rider with a horse for lessons. You may be able to get round this by the owners of the horse lending it to the rider thereby not involving you directly ie you teach the rider on a horse they loan/borrowfrom the owner but I would make sure you make sure any such agreements are written and watertight for your own protection as it would be easy for things to go wrong.
