Whats everyones recommendations for clearing conjunctivitis? My mare is wearing a fly mask when hot and having eye ointment/drops but its not budging

Ta all x

I would get the vet again, eyes can be tricky and not worth taking a risk with, make sure you wash the fly mask regularly to make sure it is not causing the infection to continue by being dirty.

She has had conjunctivitis before, laat summer from the flys. It looks exactly the same so the vet hasnt been out this time.
The fly mask is being washed regularly x

Get the vet out to check her. It may or may not be a simple conjunctivitis, but things can go very wrong very quickly with equine eyes, it needs checking asap.

My cob had a persistent conjunctivitis last year, it needed a two pronged attack of alternate chloramphenicol and genticin drops (every two hours) to shift it.

Camomile tea works wonders for conjunctivitis just soak tea bags wipe over infected eye & remember to use a clean bag per wipe . Always works for my boy . Google it there's lots of info about it . Good luck .

There's no getting around it, I'm afraid, you need the vet. Mine gets it every year without fail, and every year he needs a vet visit. True conjunctivitis needs prescription medicine to clear it up. And the vet can only prescribe it if they have examined the eye - they need to check for any scratches/damage first because the medication used could cause such an injury to ulcerate. I find fly masks useless - for prevention, I use a barrier formula (think it's by animal health care) specifically designed to be used around the nose and eyes. Just wipe around the eyes with a baby wipe before conjunctivitis is present, it really helps.

Vet. Anything effecting the eyes, get the vet straight away. When Fly had conjuctivitis, she had to be flushed out too...that's not something anyone should do themselves IMO.

I should add...it usually clears up really quickly, might also be worth checking that the fly mask isn't rubbing her eyes as well. I could never find one to fit Fly without doing this, so I used to have to wipe a cloth soaked in fly spray around the edge of her eyes.

They are such a worry aren't they. Hope it's all cleared up soon. x

I think you need the vet, I've just recovered from conjunctivitis , it's very painfull , I had to have two lots of antibiotics eye drops to get rid of it , my pony suffered with it last year

She has had anti biotic eye drops
Which are not working. You really do need a vet out asap to check her out. Hopefully it's still readily treatable, but you are losing time.

For some things, I'm happy to chat to my vet on the phone, and describe symptoms, and take it from there. With eye problems, it's always a vet visit straight away (and my vet practice won't dispense eye drops without a visit).
