Hi all I am going to be looking at connemara ponies to buy in the near future with a focus on showing and show jumping. I have got some stuff already lined up to view but I was wondering what restrictions/classes I would be able to do if I got a connie cross. I am thinking about a connie x ID but I have no experience with connie crosses and more in the nf/smalll natives range. I love the look of a connie x ID but want to make sure I would not be restricting myself by not buying a class 1 connie. Thanks!

You wouldn’t be able to do M&M classes but other classes are about type not breed.

I have a Connie x TB who did very well in-hand this season as she’s only 3 (mostly youngstock classes and odd-coloured) as she’s buckskin.

Once she’s under saddle I think she will do well in riding horse classes.

Depends how they are built and height wise really - you may be able to do some hunter classes depending on this or possibly riding horse? If you just wanted local level then there will be a lot more classes you could do

There are some M & M part bred classes, you would have to look at the National Pony society to find these! Or possibly some of the other pony affiliated bodies.

Depending on your age, BSPS WHP (riders up to 20 yrs old for ponies not exceeding 153cm and riders up to 25 yrs old for horses not exceeding 158cm).

It all depends on their type, height and your age plus how seriously you are hoping to show

For example a 15hh Connie cross could make a super show hunter pony, Intermediate SHT or working hunter pony but there would be rider age restrictions in all those classes, these would also be options for a pure over height Connie

A cross may make a small hunter - max size 15.2 and no rider age restrictions

Or open hunter classes if of a suitable type but I think a Connie cross may struggle against the big boys

There are part bred classes - a set percentage of Connie would be needed as a minimum and there is no rider age limit but largely these classes are won by welsh/arab part breds of a much lighter 'show pony' build. These classes would not be open to a pure Connie that's over height

Locally you can do riding club horse, part breds (usually no percentage needed but again usually won by a show pony type) working hunter (if no age limit) sports horse, open hunter

A pure Connie under 14.2 can do M&M classes and M&M WHP and no rider age restriction.

I'd say if you were serious about showing to do some homework as an inch in height can make all the difference to your options - try and find someone who can help you source one - a show equine is a very niche animal - there are so many out there that don't make it
