I am thinking of putting my mare in foal this year and a Connemara would be my preference. The foal would be for me to keep. My mare is 16hh TB x ID and I wondered, if I put her to a 14.2hh Connie - do you think I would have a chance of getting something around 15.2hh? Considering I am only short and in 20yrs time I will be 60 (gulp!!), I don't think I will want to be hunting something enormous!!

Does anyone know of any Connemaras at stud in the southwest? I spent ages googling this afternoon and tried the breed society website but sadly I couldn't find anything.

And, as ridiculous as it might sound, I really don't want a grey!! (perhaps I chose the wrong breed!) but was hoping that if I put my chestnut mare to a dun I would have a better chance of not getting a grey!

Any suggestions, advice or thoughts very welcome

There is a Connie stallion standing in Bodmin in cornwall. My friend uses him fer her Connie mare, threw a cracking little filly last year but it is going to be a grey. But both dam and sire are grey.If you need more details let us know and i will ask for you.

Thanks Rema, I am absolutely sure I came across one last year near Newton Abbot - could that be the same one do you think?

Great thanks - are we friends on facebook? I have lots of HHO friends, but haven't a clue who they are with their "real" names!!

hi ,Shipton teasel a dun connie stands at Langaller stud at bovey tracey with charles upham, maybe the one you were thinking of.

Langaller farm stud this is just outside newton abbot, had a connermara standing at stud,(Shipton teasel) a few years ago, not to sure if he is still there, 14.hh dun who when crossed with chestnuts produces many palominos, www.langaller farm.co.uk

tinternet is a wonderfull thing lol, I was concidering him for my mare, but to a 14.2 mare, when i wanted bigger didn't quite add up, decided againts in the end.

Thank you for those replies and links. A palamino - would exceed my expectations!!

I see he is only 14hh though, are there any others in the West Country? Would be great if I could find a bigger one

Try Trevoulter Barton Stud http://www.trevoulterbartonstud.co.uk/index.htm for a Section D palomino in the South West who is 14.1hh (and still growing!).

BTW whereas the upper height limit for Connies is 14.2hh, Welsh Section Ds have no upper height limit and grey is very rare, but dilutes (palominos and duns/buckskins) certainly are not. So perhaps you have been looking at the wrong breed.

Damn - sorry that should have been a happy smilie not a sad smilie -Doh!!

Thank you Ciss, not too keen on looking at Welsh D's. Having a pb connie outweighs the risk of getting a grey!

At west Down stud in South Molton , Paul has a strawberry roan grade 1 connemara stallion, must be 14.2, beautiful looking pony, not advertised yet though.

I too would recommend Shipton Teasel, great irish lines, and a friend has bred a cracking colt by him who is now down at langaller - was only born last year tho!!

Thats really interesting and just down the road from me!!

Try Walstead Willow Warbler - stands in Somerset or Walstead Top of the Morning in Wiltshire.

Bit biased as both are related to my chap. WTotM is used on mares very similar to yours to be part breds and I am sure his owners will be able to help with height guidance etc.

Details of both are on the Connemara website - http://www.britishconnemaras.co.uk

I'm very jealous!!

second templebready fear bui - that stallion is amazing.

my friend has a stunning dun 15.2 by him who won the small hunters last year at dublin.

would really really reccomend that stallion - there are some REALLY nice horses here by him! they all have fab jumps and temperments as well

Fear Bui is in East Sussex www.lowernewbarn.co.uk

He is available by AI and as connies go he is a legend sport horse sire! Plus he throws big so you have less chance of getting an undesirable size.

I know him personally, he is a delight!

[/ QUOTE ]i was going to suggest this stallion but could not remember the studs name

So far I am now in contact with the owners of Oaklands Cloudbreaker and the unadvertised one at West Down Stud who I can pop down to have a look at - its all terribly exciting

Caj - I saw yours advertised too and Fear Bui also looks lovely - how the hell do I chose - Lol!

Sorry dont know of any stallions in your neck of the woods but interestingly my TB/ID 16hh mare is due to foal in May to a 14.2hh reg Connemara stallion. I was hoping for a useful sort of about 15.1hh but then do you ever get what you planned for!

The one at lowernewbarnstud is the one I recommended, it's the same stud where My O My stands,I can't wait to see how our foal turns out.
If you google the connemara's name quite a lot of info comes up saying how amazing he is.
Might be worth using with recommendations like that.
