Hi all,

I'm looking to put my warmblood mare in foal soon and have my heart set on a connemara stallion.

Being tall myself, the connemara's breed specification height is a concern. So I'm specifically looking for a stallion which is 14.2hh and which tends to throw tall offspring (rather than throwing toward the lower end of the connie height spectrum).

Anyone have any particular connie stallions springing to mind?

Has to be Templebready Fear Bui. I was so desperate to use him but went tb in the end. Hes old now but look at his progeny...

My friend has a lovelyconnie stallion he is a classic example and graded. He has shown to a high level and has a fantastic temperament. PM if you want her detials.

Thank you all for your replies.
I will certainly look into the stallion mentioned! Sounds very promising!

What is it about the connemara that makes you want to use one? What height is your mare and what height do you aim to breed?

I had connies during my younger years and have never really found a breed which matches up to them in my estimations.
Of course, one shouldn't stereotype breeds. But I've never met a connemara I didn't like. I love their pluckyness and hardiness mixed with that surprisng sporting ability. There's just something about them!
Being tall I've stayed away from ponies, but since my mare (15.3hh) injured herself and I decided to put her in foal, I decided a connie would work very nicely her bloodlines. I think it would compliment her beautifully.

My ID xSWB/ISH mare had a super colt foal by Canal Laura's Lad (14.2hh) Reg Conny last year. Having spoken to a lady who regular breeds similar crosses I was informed that if you are using a Conny stallion on a larger mare you tend to get a youngster bigger than the in-between height. So if your mare is 15.3hh and you used a 14.2hh stallion you'd hopefully get something around 15.1 - 15.2hh from her.

Yeah Fear Bui is stunning, even though he is getting on a bit he got 100% success rate last year and still looks fab. With plenty of top eventers sending successful (even 3*) eventing mares to him, it speaks volumes considering he is a pony!

Dan has moved to Normandy, but may be popping up again in Ireland soon.....

However, in the mean time there is info of how to contact him to use the frozen on this webbie www.lowernewbarn.co.uk - The Frozen is of EXCELLENT quality.

Fear Bui is something else, he's a little horse not a pony

Really helpful info there everyone, thank you very much :-)!

Have emailed Templebready's owners to enquire about AI - he looks a stunning boy!

Just posted a new thread asking if anyone's heard of a connie stallion called Aran Flight. Don't suppose any of you know of his whereabouts?

Could I just mention that it's actually Lincoln University at the Riseholme campus just outside the city who do the AI for Castle Comet? There used to be a Riseholme College and the name still lingers. And yes, Castle Comet is very nice. He was retired from showing as his owner felt he had done pretty much as well as could be asked of any horse/pony, but he came out of retirement just for, I think the Lincoln Show last year and was still winning.

We know! Very hard to shake the past off. Still get people who have no idea it's a university campus now. And please no jokes about yes, and they're the students- heard 'em all!

Sorry, gone a bit off line there.....

No, no - very helpful to know what's called what these days ;-).

Thanks everyone. It's been a really helpful thread! x

Grianagh Petrus is a stallion son of Ashfield Mactalla, he is dun and 14.1 and stands in Bedfordshire (although he can be available in Surrey). He has sired a number of my TBxConne youngsters and they are all dun, brown or bay.

I second any Ashfield line. Ashfield Mactella is lovely.

I have a 14.2 5 year old by Ashfield bobby sparrow and he is exceptional.
