Connemara temperament and weight carrier

They are just awesome and this thread proves that. I can’t imagine having any other breed now!

I wouldn't describe mine as sharp but he does need someone with a sticky bum because he broncs a lot when he's wound up or excited (e.g. cantering out on a hack or going XC).

I absolutely love him though and wouldn't change him. He has just the right amount of spice for what I want him for and apart from the bucking thing, is AWESOME to hack. Not spooky.

Ps this is normal hacking speed for us, even after a nearly three hour hack... my Connie before was also like this. You need a sense of humour for the buzzy ones..

Love Michen's Connie, super chap. For my next one I'm going to go for a Connie, or Connie cross something so its a bit bigger but love their attitudes and personalities. After having a welsh D I think a Connie would be simpler? LOL.
A friend has a gorgeous 14.2 Connie thats sane enough to take her mum around a 50cm SJ course at a venue then step up to 90cm SJ course and ODEs.. plus hes incredibly good at dressage. Hes just a all round lovely pony.

I think quirky is a good work to describe Connies! As others have said mine is the right mix of good fun while still being safe. He does like to bounce around while excited and I wouldn't put a novice on him. He really does make me laugh though and we have a great friendship.

Quite a few Connies I've known (including mine) have been quite sensitive and they can get upset over the silliest of things. I think weight wise they vary. Mine and a couple of others I know aren't terribly good doers and are also very picky with their feed. Another I knew would probably eat you if you stood still long enough and spent most of his life in a muzzle.

In summary I would say great fun ponies who are generally up for a bit of anything but do expect them to have their own little foibles!

I think Connies can do pretty much anything - the Irish (&GB) pony eventing teams are full of them, they can SJ at 148 GP, and are all round talented little individuals. Its worth noting that the 'lighter' connies are basically a mini sport horse, and can often behave as such (with an added dollop of pony attitude and self preservation!)
There are such massive variations though, so finding one to suit might mean going to see several.
Unlike some of the british natives they aren't traditional weight carriers, even the less sporty ones. They also don't necessarily live on fresh air like some other native breeds
My YO loves them and she buys them unbroken and backs them and then knocks them about at local shows with a competent teenager. They can be spooky, stubborn little creatures but if they are started right then they can channel that correctly (!)- but that is no different to any other horse really. May need a competent rider to deal with potential 'Kevin' moments
IMHO a connie x TB is one of the best all rounder low / medium level competition horses about

I have a sporty type connie and he's 16/16.1hh! I think they micro-chipped the wrong foal to be honest ha.

He's definitely challenged me and taught me a lot since I've had him. He's just a walking contradiction with all sorts of stuff - very sensitive about some stuff but not arsed about others, very clever in some ways but an absolute dunce in others.

Ridden wise he's amazing. You can get on him after two months of doing nothing and he behaves exactly the same as if he's been ridden every day. On the ground he can be challenging as he turns into a know-it-all Mr Attitude if he's not kept on top of and kept busy but that's manageable and just the way he is.

Conformation wise he's not as stocky as some but has massive shoulders and quite a wide, flat, short back so he's in an XXW 16 1/2" saddle. I'm 9st 7lbs and 5'5"

Well I must be cruel as I can range from 10st to 12st (I try not to!) but I have a 15hh sports type Connie. Thankfully I must ride light and certainly don't look fat! He is a little angel and little sod all the same time, but I wouldn't swop him for the world. He is bombproof in the weirdest ways, you could literally shot a shot gun next to him and he wouldn't flinch, but a different coloured bush can give him heart failure! He's very good with my elderly mum and my niece and nephew, infinitely tolerant if a little bit cheeky.
He loves his routines and has to do stuff his way, like poo in bushes/fields while out hacking etc. He is always starving despite being a fairly good doer. He also has a very annoying habit of not always wanting to caught, this is amplified if he does not have his headcollar on. He doesn't even run away, he snorts and runs round in a circle. Last time he pulled this trick I put up a corral, lured him in with food and then tried to catch him. He just jumped out of the corral in a very controlled fashion.
That said he's competed upto Medium, was a hunt hireling before I him and will jump a course of 90 with nervous old me on top. I love him to pieces, and loads of people have said they'd love to buy one just like him but in reality I doubt they could manage his little foibles and he quickly learns your weaknesses, being a pony basically!

My 15.3 over height connie is like this.

I also adore my connie x who is by the stallion Killaloe Buachaill Mor out of a touchdown mare. He is awesome and events/ hunts /shows and is a lovely kind boy. However as a 4 year old he was a handful and would snort and passage down the road! He has a massive buck. Now he is 8 he is mostly laid back but still has passage moments where his tail comes up and he snorts! He is fine when he has lots to think about and loves to be worked! They definitely need a job to do.

I have a cross by KBM aswell! Out of an ID mare Corker Kent Beauty & he is just a dude- sounds like yours, loves his work, can turn his hoof to pretty much anything! He is 7 & still can be very playful when he wants to but give him work to do & he is happy out! And he have a lovely pop in him with a lovely canter!!
