They really do have the most amazing temperments. I took my 2 year old to inspections yesterday and we had to queue up in a line with about 20 other ponies, mares, stallions and geldings and they were all so well behaved, just stood quietly on long ropes while owners and handlers stood chatting. They were all 2 year olds, most of whom were dragged out of fields and hardly halter broke, although a few of the mares were 3 and 4 year olds and had foals at foot who were just wandering around loose. I wasn't sure how my boy would behave as although he is very well handled he'd never been anywhere before and it was a long journey for him, just over 2 hours, but he was very good and one of the nicest ponies there

, although I am biased! The quality of ponies was very high and there were some gorgeous stallions and mares.
After standing quiet in the queue though my boy came to life when he had to be trotted up in the indoor and did a lovely trot up, he got good marks for his movement and conformation but he was a bit big. Connemaras are supposed to measure 148cm to get class 1 but my boy was 153cm and so although he got good marks and passed inspection he's in class 2, which isn't really a big deal as he's a gelding and so will be a performance pony rather than used for breeding which is where the class of the pony really matters.
Anyway I was really pleased with my baby boy, he had a long day and wasn't fazed by anything. Connemaras really are an amazing breed with wonderful temperments and hopefully my boy will turn into a nice riding pony (or horse if he keeps on growing!).

I love them too, although i havn't got one even though it was my plan that my next horse would be one! Ended up buying a Warmblood X !.I am determind that one day i will get one but the prices for them over here are mad!

I have a connemara x danish warmblood and hes the most wicked, fun horse ive ever had.

He's got paces to die for from his dads wb side but his personality is definitly more taken to the connemara imo. He's like having a very overgrown pony. He's up for anything. In the stable hes the sweetest most loving horse ive ever had the pleasure of being involved with and while very sociable with people, hes definitly a mummy's boy.

I absolutly adore mine.

My daughter had a connie and we adore him, he is very quirky but the most beautiful when ridden. He loves her and no one else though but she knows his little quirks
I love all the Irish !!!

Now this is more like it! Have been speaking in the "Haflinger" post and realising its not for us, but this looks like the sort for us.

My daughter is having a few nerves and is abit overhorsed by our coloured (new mare) who is a bit quick and knows her job, and a bit spooky, so wanted to get something semi-working, hack and plod, companion, not to keep too fit, but ride-able for some hacking perhaps and half rallies, not doing a lot.

Anyone know of one? Or possibly loan us one?

We are midlands, jst west of Cambridge.

Aaah bless your little boy he sounds like a star.

I used to loan a TBxConnie mare and she was the best horse I have ever had the pleasure to know....the connie side of her was definitely very cheeky and she had gorgeous short pony paces when riding (although the TB side meant we could gallop VERY fast, hee hee!) But overall it was her very affectionate trusting nature that made me love her so much - you weren't allowed in that stable without giving her a tickle and giving her lots of attention, even to the extent she blocked the door to stop you escaping! She was like an oversized pony and I loved it :-)

Connemaras are the UK equivalent to QH's over here. They are the most fabulous ponies and I have always always had connemara X TBs for my whole life. I adore them!!

I love Connies and have one I compete at BD, love their personalities, however I'm not over keen on the new heavier set connies that are around at the moment, I like the lighter weight ones with good paces.

Alandee I'd def recommend one as they are such brilliant all rounders, and have such great temperments. My boy although he's only 2 is probably the most bombproof horse in the yard, NOTHING fazes him. They are expensive though, over here aswell they go for crazy money, especially the good ones, thats why I bought mine as a foal because I wouldn't be able to afford an older one. Connemara crosses can also be great ponies, I have a connxwelsh and had a connxTB and again they are both brilliant performance ponies and great characters.

JoC thats interesting because they were discussing that at inspections yesterday, the judges prefer the heavier ponies with more workmanlike paces, my boy didn't get as high marks for his type as he is quite tall and light of bone for a connemara but they liked his floating paces! Hopefully my boy will do dressage as well as jumping, his half brother is competing at FEI dressage in europe so the breeding is there!!

My connie is an abosolute star and whilst he isnt a beginners ride (as he is too well schooled and quick off the leg) he is loved by everyone who meets him. i even took him to a school show at my old school and had 2 11 yearold girls trying to steal him, and some of the 6th form lads had a sit on him and a walk on the leadrein on him and he was a saint. however he defys the connemara steriotype because he doesnt like jumping!
he is so cuddly and gives kisses on demand!

Now that's interesting, I have noticed that although the chunkier ones are doing well the ones that seem to be champion are still the lighter ones with floaty paces. However I guess this will change as the heavier ones come into the ring more and more.

Your boy sounds gorgeous, I love the floaty Connie paces! Where is the picture?!
