I bought her at 9 months, her name is sweet but not what I would have chosen, I would like something else for her I think, just haven't thought of it yet! I feel a little bad changing it after nearly 2 yrs of her being known as that. Anyone else changed their horses name?

My lad came to me at rising 5 and all we knew was his show name so I game him his stable name and he got used to it really quickly :)
What is your girls name at the moment?

Some people consider it bad luck to change a horse's name.

I changed a yearling's name when I bought him some years ago; he died from grass sickness as a four year old.

I changed my oldest's name when I bought him and I've had him for 16 years and he's been great. If we run into bad luck now, I don't think I can blame it on the name change.

All mine are known by different diminutives / stable names than they were called when I got them too.

I slightly changed BBB's name when I got her aged 4. I took the first letter off of her name so it wasn't that different for her to understand and it suited her better. I call all of my horses by their nicknames anyway so they will pretty much answer to anything.

It's Daisy but I call her Daze all the time. Nothing is springing to mind so maybe ill just leave it then, she does suit it and it is sweet, not like its Mavis or something is it i guess! No offense to anyone with the name Mavis but you know what i mean!

Sorry to hear about your 4 yr old, I am superstitious so will bear that in mind.

Yes some people do think it's bad luck but I personally think it's a bit of an old wives tale (sorry for your loss Aengus!) me, my mum, my sister, my neice and most of my horsey friends have changed their horses names and so far so good no one has had a disaster

I always thought it was nonsense, changed my girls name and she died in a freak accident in her field. Have just bought a new filly and am not overly keen on her name but I just can't bring myself to change it just in case. I do realise how ridiculous this is but I'd rather not take that chance.

i am freakishly superstitious i think its because my dads a strict sailor and they have all sorts of superstitions.
i bought my old mare she was called honey and we changed her show name and requested a change in her passport to Honey i'm Home, a bit of a family joke but worked perfectly coming home in xco then twos years down the line i was forced to sell her this crushed me as she was my horse of a life time who had taken me relatively far,
then my current one came with no name so we took Roo from Roose Blox, and for the first year i had him all sorts kept happening such as standing on nails, getting kicked finding out he was an avid windsucker, but because we don't know his previous stable name i feel i can't do anything about it... stupid superstitions!!1
luckily i think things are changing fingers crossed

Sometimes a name change brings about a change in personality - one riding school pony was a demented Bambi, who became a lovely Fern....and my old horse I had as a teen I changed her name to an abbreviation of her racing name as she had the name of an elderly lady, to no ill effect. In fact, I found out she had a history of prolific rearing with her previous owner....never happened with us but I might be pushing it to say the name change sorted that out....

Hinge became Herbie
Bomber became Bailey (who thought Bomber was a good name for a TB...)
That scabby one over there became Grace
Little orange one became Roo
:-).

I change the name of pretty much every horse I get. It's like a tradition now :D

My horses do tend to get injured and they all die in the end, but then so does every other. It's one superstition I don't believe in!

Change it! :D
